Australia has had its share of notorious criminals, but few have instilled the level of fear and revulsion as the man known as the ‘Lonely Hearts Killer.’
His life of crime is a chilling reminder of the capacity for evil that can lurk within. His modus operandi involved exploiting the vulnerable, using the guise of companionship to lure his victims into fatal traps.

Rodney Francis Cameron, who also went by the alias Rodney Mallard, died at the age of 72 in a Sydney hospital, leaving behind a dark legacy that has haunted communities across New South Wales and Victoria for decades.
The 72-year-old’s death at Prince of Wales Hospital at approximately 11:30 pm on 19 April marks the end of a saga that began with his first known murder in 1974.
Cameron was convicted of the rape and murder of Florence Edith Jackson, a 49-year-old nurse, and the murder of 19-year-old hitchhiker Francesco Ciliberto.
He spent nine years incarcerated in New South Wales for the murder of Jackson, before being extradited to Victoria, where he served an additional seven years for the murder of Ciliberto.
Despite serving time for these crimes, he was released from prison, only to kill again. His release in November 1989 was followed by the murder of 44-year-old Maria Goellner just seven months later.
Shortly after he was released in 1990, Cameron proceeded to commit a crime that earned him the nickname ‘Lonely Hearts Killer,’ as he utilised a radio matchmaking show to attract his next victim. Goellner was among six women who answered his call.
Cameron was imprisoned once more for life, and this time his record was labelled ‘never to be released’.
While incarcerated, Cameron also confessed to the murder of elderly war widow Sarah McKenzie, who was found with over 30 stab wounds in 1974. However, he was never tried for her murder.
Cameron’s health had been in decline due to cancer, and he spent his final years in palliative care.
Cameron’s crimes had such an impact that they were featured in an episode of Foxtel’s Crime Investigation Australia in 2009.
The program delved into his psychopathic tendencies, which manifested early in his life when he attempted to strangle a young girl at the age of ten. His life spiralled into alcohol and drug abuse, including experimentation with hallucinogenic chemicals and Satanism.
The program also highlighted the tragic stories of his victims and the relentless efforts of the police to bring him to justice. Cameron’s crimes serve as a grim reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to protect oneself from potential predators.
As we reflect on the life and death of Rodney Francis Cameron, it is crucial to remember the lives he took and the families that were forever changed by his actions. His story is a cautionary tale about the depths of human depravity and the importance of the criminal justice system in safeguarding the public.
For those who have been affected by similar tragedies or who are interested in the psychological underpinnings of criminal behaviour, Cameron’s case is a stark example of the need for ongoing vigilance and support for victims’ families. It also underscores the importance of thorough and persistent law enforcement efforts to prevent such individuals from causing further harm.
