Save your family money and heartache

Anyone who has organised a funeral for a loved one may remember that uncomfortable feeling of looking at caskets and trying to strike a balance between what you think the person would want and the cost.

This isn’t a situation you would want to put your loved ones in. You are much more likely to choose a simple and cost-effective design than a grieving family member, who may want to ensure you have the ‘best’, whatever that means.

Discussing arrangements for your funeral can be uncomfortable, but having that conversation is better than leaving grieving family members guessing. You wouldn’t let someone take an educated guess at how you wanted your wedding to play out, and it shouldn’t be any different with the ultimate celebration of your life.

This is one of the major advantages in locking in a pre-paid funeral; you can ensure that you get the funeral you want and are remembered your way.

Does your family know if you want to be buried or cremated? Will there be an open or closed casket? Confusion and disagreements are common among stressed family members after a loved one passes.

If you have a plan, this can be avoided or minimised. A plan can take the pressure off family members at a stressful time and give you peace of mind that your affairs are in order.

It isn’t just the peace of mind that comes with knowing the celebration of your life will happen your way, it is also a sensible financial decision that could save you and your family thousands of dollars.

A prepaid funeral allows you to make all the plans for your funeral and pay at the rate quoted on the day. Prices are protected and your family won’t have to find money in a hurry.

You may leave behind a substantial amount of money to family members when you die, but that doesn’t mean they will be able to access it in time for your funeral.

Of course, not everyone has the money sitting around to pay for a funeral before the event, which is why Guardian Plan, Australia’s trusted prepaid funeral plan, works closely with various funeral directors throughout Australia and offers payment plans to spread the cost.

For added peace of mind, should you move interstate, Guardian Plan can help you transfer your plan to another funeral director. See more at

Anyone else see the irony of having a lead story about the rogue insurance companies whilst on the same page directly under the opinion piece, there is a ‘sponsored’ plug for funeral insurance!

I am disgusted at the costs of funerals. $10.000 plus to put a body in the ground. Well that’s what we are do. And again, thousands of dollars to cremate a body. Where did we go wrong.

This article is NOT about funeral insurance. It is about paying upfront for your funeral before you die and is a great deal less expensive. It is less expensive than many a funeral paid for after death by family. Have a look at and you will see what I mean. CAVEAT there are a great many companies offering this service. You need to be sure that the payment you make is looked after by an independent company so that no one can run off with it!
