Fashion world mourns as iconic Australian designer passes away

The Australian fashion industry has lost one of its most cherished icons. Known for her timeless elegance and sophistication, her designs have been a staple in the wardrobes of Australian women for over four decades, embodying a blend of classic and contemporary styles that resonated deeply with her clientele.

Throughout her illustrious career, her designs graced the shelves of prestigious department stores such as Myer and David Jones, as well as her standalone boutiques.

Australian Designer, Perri Cutten’s commitment to quality and understanding of her customers’ desires earned her an honourary doctorate from Swinburne University’s Faculty of Design in 1998, a testament to her significant contributions to the world of fashion. She passed away peacefully at the age of 73

Cutten’s journey in the fashion world began in 1981 when, at the age of 31, she launched her label, named after herself and opened her first boutique on the chic High Street in Armadale, Melbourne.

Her unique vision and impeccable eye for design quickly established her as a formidable presence in the industry. Her creations were not just clothes; they were statements of grace and confidence that empowered the modern Australian woman.

By 2011, the Perri Cutten brand had expanded to 32 stores nationwide, a clear indication of the widespread appeal and love for her work.

Even after the brand was acquired by the Austin Group nearly four years ago, the essence of Perri Cutten’s vision—modern femininity and elegance—remains the cornerstone of the label.

The news of her passing was met with an outpouring of tributes, including a heartfelt post on the Perri Cutten Facebook page.

Colleagues, friends, and admirers shared their memories and expressed their condolences, highlighting the profound impact she had on those who knew her and the fashion community at large.

Perri Cutten’s legacy is one of passion, vision, and an unwavering dedication to her craft. She was not only a designer but also a loving mother, a beloved sister, a stepmother, and a devoted partner to photographer Jo Daniell.

Her life was a tapestry woven with the threads of creativity, love, and an enduring spirit that inspired everyone around her.

Her designs were more than just garments; they were a celebration of the Australian woman’s spirit, designed with purpose, integrity, and grace.

The Perri Cutten team, while saddened by her passing, remains committed to honouring her vision and carrying the brand forward into its next chapter.

A private cremation will be held, with a memorial to be announced, allowing those who admired her work and cherished her presence to pay their respects and celebrate her remarkable life and contributions to fashion.
