Doctors warn your favourite drink might be hiding a cancer-boosting ingredient!

Many Australians turn to readily available beverages for an energy boost during the day. However, recent scientific findings have prompted closer examination of a common component found in numerous such drinks.

These investigations suggest a potential link between this ingredient and certain serious health conditions, warranting careful consideration.

If you’re partial to a can of Red Bull or Celsius to get you through the afternoon slump, you might want to think twice before cracking open your next energy drink.

Doctors and researchers are sounding the alarm over a common ingredient found in many popular beverages—taurine, which, according to new research, could be fuelling the growth of certain blood cancers.

What is taurine, and why is it in so many drinks?

Taurine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning our bodies can produce it naturally. It’s found in the brain, heart, muscles, and, as it turns out, bone marrow.

You’ll also find it in meat and fish, and it’s a staple additive in energy drinks, where it’s marketed as a way to boost mental clarity and energise your body.

For years, taurine has been considered safe in moderate amounts, and some studies have even suggested it can help reduce inflammation and ease the side effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients.

But new research from the University of Rochester in New York is challenging that assumption, at least when it comes to blood cancers like leukaemia.

The new research: Taurine’s dark side

In a groundbreaking study, scientists discovered that taurine acts as a kind of ‘super fuel’ for leukaemia cells.

The research, which involved both mice and human leukaemia cells, found that taurine is produced by certain healthy cells in the bone marrow—the very place where leukaemia takes hold. A specific gene, SLC6A6, then transports taurine directly to the cancer cells.

Once inside, taurine helps leukaemia cells undergo glycolysis, a process that breaks down sugar to create energy.

This extra energy allows the cancer cells to divide and multiply more rapidly, making the disease more aggressive.

Dr Jeevisha Bajaj, the lead researcher, says this is the first time taurine has been shown to play such a direct role in fuelling leukaemia. ‘Our current data suggest that it would be helpful to develop stable and effective ways to block taurine from entering leukaemia cells,’ she said.

Should you be worried?

Before you panic and toss out every can of energy drink in your fridge, it’s important to note that this research is still in its early stages.

The findings are based on laboratory studies and animal models, and more research is needed to confirm the risks in humans.

However, the results are concerning enough that doctors are urging caution, especially for people with a history of blood cancers or those currently undergoing treatment.

Taurine supplements are sometimes recommended to cancer patients to help with inflammation and chemotherapy side effects, but this new evidence suggests that they could be doing more harm than good in some cases.

Energy drinks have long been controversial, with concerns ranging from heart health to sleep disruption.

Now, with this new research, there’s another reason to be cautious—especially if you’re in a higher-risk group for blood cancers.

It’s not just leukaemia that’s under the microscope. Researchers are also investigating whether taurine could be linked to the rising rates of colon cancer in younger adults.

A study currently underway at the University of Florida is looking at whether daily consumption of energy drinks like Red Bull or Celsius changes the gut bacteria in ways that could increase cancer risk.

How much taurine is too much?

Taurine is generally considered safe in small amounts, but high doses can cause side effects like nausea, dizziness, diarrhoea, and constipation.

The real concern, according to experts, is the cumulative effect of regularly consuming energy drinks or supplements containing taurine—especially if you have underlying health conditions.

What should you do?

  • Read the labels: If you’re a regular consumer of energy drinks, check the ingredients list for taurine and consider cutting back, especially if you have a family history of cancer.
  • Talk to your doctor: If you’re undergoing cancer treatment or have concerns about your risk, speak to your GP or oncologist before taking any supplements containing taurine.
  • Stay informed: Research is ongoing, and recommendations may change as we learn more about how taurine affects cancer cells.

The bottom line

While energy drinks can offer a quick pick-me-up, they may come with hidden risks—especially for older Australians who are already at higher risk for certain cancers. As always, moderation is key, and it’s wise to be cautious about what you put into your body.
