Make CBDs smoke free

In a move which would make Melbourne one of the healthiest cities in the world, a city counsellor has called for the CBD to be a smoke-free zone.

The plan would make it illegal for pedestrians, footpath diners and workers in the CBD to smoke unless using designated shelters.

The move has the backing of Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, whose mother died of lung cancer, but he said the changes should be incremental.

“If we can show traders and businesses, just as happened in pubs and restaurants, that this doesn’t detract from your business … then bit by bit we will win that battle. But our aim this year is to do six [no-smoking zones],” he said.

There are cities around the world which ban smoking in certain areas, but this would be a world first and, if passed in Melbourne, could see other Australian city councils following suit.

Would you be happy for your CBD to be smoke free? Or do you think people have the right to smoke where they like outdoors?
