Free flu vaccinations 2015
Free flu vaccinations 2015

Winter is just around the corner, no doubt bringing with it a nasty flu season. Free flu vaccines are available and if you're in one of the at risk groups below, now is the time to make an appointment with your GP to see if you should have the shot.

Eligible groups for free government supplied seasonal influenza vaccine include:

  • People who are 65 years of age and over
  • Pregnant women at any time during their pregnancy
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years  and older
  • Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • Any person six months of age and older with a chronic condition predisposing to severe influenza illness that requires regular medical follow-up or hospitalisation, including children aged six months to 10 years undergoing long-term aspirin therapy
  • People with cardiac disease
  • People with chronic respiratory conditions
  • People with immunocompromising conditions
  • People with renal disease
  • People with diabetes and other metabolic disorders
  • People with chronic neurological conditions
  • People with haematological disorders
  • People with obesity (BMI greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2) who also fall under one of the above categories
  • People with alcoholism requiring regular medical follow-up or hospitalisation in the preceding year and fall under one of the above categories.

Flu shots are available from your doctor or immunisation provider. It is important to note that whilst the vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program for certain groups, a consultation fee may apply. Many clinics are, however, running free weekend immunisation sessions, during which you can see a nurse for your shot without a doctor’s consultation fee. To find out more, contact your local GP clinic or your state or territory health department.

It's probably one area where Mr. Abbott will not make it compulsory for the elderly to have flu shots, he wants us all to fall of our perches, less elderly, less pensions.

You would have to be a bloody idiot not to have the Flu Shot. I am 75 and had my first shot in 1998, 18 years ago and have not had a single dose of flu since. I was living in Coolgardie, a remote little community in the goldfields then where my chances of getting the Flu were very low. I would have it even if I had to pay.

Your one year ahead of me in the age stakes, however I've never ever had a flu shot and never ever had the flu. I last had a cold around 2002.
You can still get the flu with a flu shot because the make-up of the serum is a calculated guess by the CSL as to what types of flu have occurred overseas and may invade Australia this coming winter.
My next door neighbour for many years worked for a doctor and of course had flu shots every year but still got the flu, not once but several times. Too much contact with sick people coming into the surgery, I guess. However, since she has retired (the past ten years) she still has her flu shots, but is not experiencing flu every winter/spring. If you have medical problems of course it is beneficial to have the flu injections, but for me, I'll continue not to have a flu shot while I am in my healthy state with no medical problems whatsoever.

Yeh MITZY, I suppose there are horses for courses, a some do and some don't, sort of thing. Anyway I am happy with my track record and results.
Prior to 1998 I probably had a dose of flu most years, and since then Winter is just cooler than Summer.

Would have thought Simmo the only thing anyone would be be in danger of catching out at Coolgardie would be STDs :-)

I am NOT a bloody idiot Young Simmo, I had ONE many years ago and was off work for a week, thought I was going do die, and took months to get over it.
Every body is different and one concotion is supposed to suit everyone, in your dreams, and having a computer, which you have, get into the Internet and thoroughly check the poisonous ingredients of the 'Flu Shot.
Like global climate change warming, the 'flu shot is a massive rip-off, earning the medical fraternity billions, yes, BILLIONS of dollars on an annual basis.

I have NEVER had the 'flu in my life and I am fit, healthy and way past 60 years old.

Just make sure when you are talking about it that you know the difference between a really nasty heavy cold and Influenza!

    or research other sites.
99.9% of the time it is said somebody has the flu, when what they have is a really heavy cold

Influenza is not a heavy cold so a flu shot won'r protect you from a cold!

Yeah, I see it every year. Some of the blokes go up and get a jab at work and they are the first to get something. Flu shot is only good for what they think is coming.
Best deterrent is to keep away from the Shows, keep off airplanes and wash your hands regularly.
