A lesson in making time

Acclaimed artist, author, health coach and speaker Meredith Gaston is passionate about inspiring others to blossom through self-love and self-empowerment. In this extract from her book, Find Your Sparkle, she shares her tips for time-poor people … and a recipe for her delicious Choc-Miso Bliss Balls.

•••

Time poverty has become something we almost compete over. We are always somehow busy, very busy, or busier than ever before! Many people wish to make positive changes in their lives, incorporating yoga, dance or daily meditation, for example, but claim that they simply have ‘no time’ at all. The truth is, we all have time, the same 24 hours in any given day. The point of difference is our priorities – what we choose to value the most, the things we ‘make’ time for, not ‘find’ time to do.

I once heard (author) Louise Hay describing her relationship with time. She suggested that when she needed more time she would mentally ‘stretch’ it with the power of her thinking.

Conversely, when she wanted time to pass more quickly for whatever reason, she would use the power of thought to compress it. She suggested that time was flexible and that we could all practise this fun technique, making time work for us, rather than against us.

I agree with Louise. With time on our side, we can certainly embrace the fullness, richness and beauty of our lives with peace and joy. While the notion of time being elastic might sound terribly esoteric to some, quantum physicists would suggest that it is completely possible as, like all things, time is what we make it.

On the next occasion you find yourself saying that you have ‘no time’ for things you truly want or need to do, catch yourself. Check in with your priorities and see how you could better structure them in support of your happiness. Talk gently to time, asking it to expand, so that you can achieve all the good things you wish to on any given day. Ask time to love and support you in every way.

Rather than saying or believing that there’s never enough time, try to correct yourself by thinking and saying, ‘There is always more than enough time for the things I want and need to do.’ Celebrate time and make each moment count. Indeed, time can pass us by when we are distracted and mentally absent in our present moments. Simply returning ourselves to where we are, right here, right now, is a way of expanding, honouring and enjoying time.

Let time become something luxurious and abundant in your life. Begin with your thoughts, turn your thoughts into speech, and follow your words with affirmative actions. Pro-actively transform your relationship with time and find your sparkle deeply nourished.

Meredith’s Choc-Miso Bliss Balls

These protein-rich, flavoursome chocolate bliss balls never last long in our little nest. With the surprisingly delicious, healthful addition of miso paste, these bliss balls pack a flavour punch that’s hard not to love! Simply mix, roll and enjoy. Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks, and savour at your whim as nourishing little sweet treats.

Makes 30 bliss balls.

Ingredients

  • 225g (2 1/2 cups) desiccated (shredded) coconut
  • 85g (2/3 cup) raw cacao powder
  • 180g (2/3 cup) tahini
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons organic vanilla essence
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 140g (1 cup) mixed nuts (walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts)
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 heaped tablespoon miso paste (I use brown rice miso)
  • 90g (1/2 cup) buckinis* (activated buckwheat groats)

Method

Pulse 135g (1 1/2 cups) of the coconut along with all the other ingredients, except the buckinis, in a food processor until clumps begin to form. Add tiny splashes of water if your mix feels at all dry.

Add the buckinis and stir gently to combine, keeping them crunchy and intact.

Using your hands, have fun rolling the mix into little balls, coating with the remaining desiccated coconut to finish

*Note: Any flour can be substituted for buckinis, such as oat, barley, rice or corn, however the recipe may have been adjusted to deal with the heavier buckwheat flour.
