Basic core strength exercises

Following on from his article, ‘The importance of core strength’, physiotherapist Jason Lee has answered Mary’s related questions regarding basic core strengthening exercises.

Q. Mary
Can you send a diagram of a couple of basic core strengthening exercises that are suitable for just about everyone? I have an L4/L5 problem and so does my mother.

A. Regardless of the location of the symptoms, improving core strength and flexibility is a great way to not only reduce pain, but also to prevent the likelihood of low back pain.

Implementing strategies including minimising time spent sitting and keeping as active as possible have been proven to assist in the management of low back pain.  I have previously provided some strategies to manage lower back pain

In regards to providing exercise diagrams, this really isn’t advisable. While exercises may appear simple, it is important to ensure that they are tailored specifically for you. Performing exercises incorrectly can result in muscles being used incorrectly, or indeed the wrong exercises for your actual complaint may increase or prolong the duration of symptoms.  I would certainly recommend seeing your local physiotherapist for a tailored treatment plan.
