No fuss weight loss

Research shows that being overweight or obese can lead to all sorts of health problems. It can cause heart disease, diabetes, musculo-skeletal problems and sleep apnoea. It can also leave you feeling pretty average about your body image. But who wants to pump iron at the gym? Simple day-to-day activities help you shed some kilos.

Go for a ride
It’s true what they say about riding a bike. What they don’t tell you is how many calories you can burn doing it. Take your bike up to the local shops, or go for a ride on the weekend with a friend. If you persist in taking your bike out once or twice a week, you will find that the kilos gradually melt away, and it’s good for the environment too.

Swim yourself slim
Did you know that swimming one kilometre is equal to running four? I know which one I’d rather do. Swimming laps can be an incredibly relaxing way to while away the hours, and it is one of the most effective ways to lose weight. Swimming is also good for anyone with arthritis or other musculo-skeletal problems, as it is a non-weight bearing exercise, so it won’t wreak havoc on your joints.

Take a walk
Walk for 45 minutes every day. Why 45 minutes? Because studies have shown that while 30 minutes of walking will prevent weight gain, 45 minutes of walking will result in weight and fat loss. That’s not 45 minutes of meandering, mind you. Grab a friend and go for a brisk walk along a pre-planned route. You won’t even notice the time if you’re chatting and enjoying yourself.

Clean something
Set yourself a task – wash all the floors in the house, make the windows sparkle, or thoroughly clean one room. Whatever it is, put on some music and clean with a spring in your step. You can burn 200 calories per hour cleaning, and you’ll have a tidy house to show for your efforts.

Gardening is another fantastic way to get out, get active and lose weight. Spend a few hours each weekend pulling weeds, pruning, and generally sprucing up the outside of your house. Then, when the weather warms up, throw a garden party to celebrate all your hard work. Remember, it’s important to reward yourself occasionally, so enjoy a slice of cake along with your guests.

Wear weights
Get a set of wrist and ankle weights from your local sports store. You can wear them while you perform everyday activities, such as cooking, doing the laundry, walking to the shops, or gardening. Even a small amount of weight will help you to shed the kilos. Weight-bearing exercise is particularly important for women over 50 years of age, as it helps to maintain bone density and avoid osteoporosis.

Throw away your ‘fat’ clothes
Once you have dropped a size or two throw away your ‘fat’ clothes. The idea of buying a whole new wardrobe to replace them will help to maintain your new figure. It will also stop you from wearing clothing which is too big – you’ve worked for your new body, so why not show it off?
