Make your own nutritious pet food

Regardless of whether your animal companion is of feather, fur or fin, it’s nice to spoil them now and again. Try these treats which won’t blow your budget.

For dogs

Dog morsels

2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 cups white flour
1 cup skim milk powder
2 eggs
1/2 cup melted beef or pork dripping (or lard)

Preheat oven to 180’C. Mix ingredients together with enough water to make a stiff dough. Roll out and cut into shapes. Bake until cooked through.

Veal Stew

1 kilo on the bone stewing veal
1 cup tinned tomatoes
1 cup water
1 reduced salt chicken bouillon cube
Pinch of parsley

Place ingredients in a pot and simmer.
When meat is tender, remove all the bones.
Cut the meat in chunks and mix stew with dry dog food.

Sauteed Liver
1 teaspoon corn oil
500g beef liver
1/2 cup water

Heat corn oil in a pan.
Add beef liver and fry on both sides until cooked but not dry inside.
Add water to the pan and stir to combine with all the brown bits.
For dogs, cut the liver into pieces and serve

For cats

Chicken Soup
1 chicken liver
1 giblet
1 chicken heart
1 chicken neck
2 cups water
1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley

Combine all ingredients in a pot, cover and simmer until the giblet is tender.
Blend in a food processor until smooth

Fish Dinner
1 teaspoon corn oil
1 small firm-flesh fish
1/2 cup hot water

Heat corn oil in a pan and fry the fish until it flakes apart easily. Remove and cool. Pour hot water into the pan and scrape in the brown bits. Remove the bones from the fish and mix with the pan juices. Grind with a fork to combine.

Goldfish Food

1 Earthworm

Goldfish live mostly on pellet food however, as a special treat try and find an earthworm in the garden for your goldfish. Make sure to wash off any dirt from the worm just in case any residual fertiliser remains. Chop the worm into pieces depending on the size of your fish.
