I’ll be celebrating a milestone birthday soon and really don’t want to have a party. My family have responded to this by throwing so many different options at me that I simply can’t choose. I would actually like nothing more than to let the day slide on past but don’t want to offend anyone. What should I do?

You’re not alone. A lot of people don’t like celebrating birthdays and are particularly hesitant to publicise a milestone. But by letting it slide, you not only lose the opportunity to celebrate being alive and hopefully well, you stop others showing their love for you. Your family obviously want to mark the occasion and your birthday may be an opportunity to give them the gift of giving. It doesn’t have to be a huge celebration. Why not choose the lowest key option and allow your nearest and dearest to demonstrate how they feel about you? You never know, you might even enjoy yourself.
