Let’s be honest: during coronavirus lockdown it has been hard to resist the allure of internet intimacy. Rates of watching porn have skyrocketed in Australia during isolation.

But have you ever wondered what effects consuming adult content can have on your health?

We asked five experts whether watching porn is bad for our health.

Three out of five experts said yes

Their main concerns were about the creation of unrealistic expectations, links with gender-based violence, and the potential for addiction.

But some suggested education can help offset some of these possible harms, and porn can play a positive role for LGBTIQ+ young people.

Here are the experts’ detailed responses:

At 70 yrs of age Im a firm believer that if you dont use it, you lose it. Anything that helps in this respect (which porn does) has to be a positive.

At my age I’m reminded of the old guy who went to the doctor who informed him that he would have to give up half of his sex life.

The response? “Which half Doc, thinking about it or talking about it?”

At my age of 81 I am more interested in watching cowboys ( western) movies than porn shows.

Only if you get caught (lol). But seriously, it’s a vacuous preoccupation and best avoided by anyone with something productive to do.

Lets face it, only our imagination (what) works faster than our real us … that’s if you are 70 and over …. some may disagree… but I speak for myself ..

Agreed, Rodney Dangerfield summed it up best, describing how making love with his wife was such a long and tedious affair because She couldnt think of anyone else as well.

so how do you get to be an expert….by watching porn for extended periods I guess….so the majority of the experts must have experienced bad health from said watching…..how altruistic of them to suffer bad health in order to improve their expertise…..reminds me of the old days of censorship when the censors job was to watch filth to save us from it. They must have all ended up depraved.

Who cares, really. I always found porn boring and tedious. The biggest sex organ is the one between your ears, if that lets you down what’s wrong with a bit of visual stimulation. And what makes these people experts? I have been having sex for well over 50 years and tried most things and I reckon I am as much an expert on it as anyone else. My opinion. It’s good fun and not to be taken too seriously.

It definitely helps elderly men. With aging, in my limited experience female response gets quicker and stronger while males like me become slower, take much longer, and need extra stimulus to succeed, especially after prostate surgery. Why should men deny themselves the pleasure that their wives can more easily achieve? Just maintain a sense of humour about it all and don’t hide it from your partner.
