Can you still access eye glasses free through VisonCare.

Free seniors reading glasses

YOURLifeChoices member Norman is in need of new reading glasses and wants to know if he can still access them free through VisonCare.

Q. Norman
I normally obtain the free seniors reading glasses every two years through VisionCare Australia. However the funds were redirected to other areas via the Labor Government. Can you tell me if things are back to normal this year as my eyes have not been tested for three years and it's time I had an update.

A. The program to which you refer is actually state-funded and as far as I can find out, this is now operational. You can find out more information from VisionCare, toll free on 1800 806 851 and the NSW Government PDF which covers eye health and outlines the program.

You can also find out more from VisionCare NSW.

We hadn't heard of this service in Victoria - does anyone know if it is available here..... I just spent a fortune on new lenses for my old frames and had to wait over 2 months because of stuff ups. Would really appreciate some help to reduce expenses in this area - My husband is also in need of updated lenses.

If you Google Victorian Govt DHS, they list all concessions which include free (or heavily discounted) glasses every two years, and only available at certain optometrists. I can't get through at the moment, but all the info is there.

S.A do not have free specs, a mere $20 is all you get whilst other states give 2 pairs of specs every two years. It should be federal, medicare is federal. We are all Australians. Perhaps if Aged pensioners could get their specs updated the powers that be wouldn't have to worry so much about their driving ability.

Yeah, this program is still functional and I remember my grandmother getting one lately. I think you should contact with the Vision care centre for more details and I am sure that they can guide you with the future plans.

Vision Care no longer have this programme. (if you click on the link given above you will find this).
The programme is now provided by Vision Australia.
But here is the catch - if you have more than $500 in the bank you do not qualify!

After clicking the link for Visioncare NSW I eventually find that "As of 01 July 2014, VisionCare NSW is no longer the Administrator of the NSW Spectacles Program.
