Wouldn’t it be nice if you could check your insulin, cholesterol, or even find signs of a bacterial or viral infection from the comfort of your own home? A new device, currently known as the V-chip (short for volumetric bar-chart chip), will allow you to test 50 different molecules in your blood from anywhere in the world.
The V-chip is a device about the size of a business card. It is accurate, cheap and portable, and it only requires a single drop of blood to perform 50 different tests simultaneously. These same tests would normally require a vial of blood to be sent to a lab, with a few days’ wait for the results.
The results of preliminary tests were published last year in Nature Communications and further improvements are currently being made to the design.
