Quick reaction when dealing with burns is vital to minimise the severity of the injury. Here is how to administer emergency first aid to a burns victim, as shared by Dr Fiona Wood, former Australian of the Year.

·tRemove clothes

(Even if skin comes off with clothes – it would have come off anyway)

·tApply cool water to the wound for 20 minutes

(This will result in an 80% reduction in the severity of the wound)

·tWarm and comfort the patient – speak soothingly, calm them as much as possible

·tGet medical assistance

·tNever use butter or ice
