Dementia vaccinations take off

For the first time a dementia vaccination is being trialled by Perth researchers. The drug on trial is an unusual combination of testosterone and fish oil, as both have been shown anecdotally to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Approximately 400 men aged over 60 will be recruited to take part in the clinical trial to prevent or delay Alzheimer’s disease. The study is being conducted by expert Professor Ralph Martins, from WA’s McCusker Alzheimer’s Research Foundation and Edith Cowan University.

On the same day that the Perth study was announced, a pharmaceutical firm in Quebec found a way to stimulate the brain’s natural defence mechanisms in people with Alzheimer’s. Funding was also approved for a Boston-led study to test whether drugs can hold off Alzheimer’s in those with no symptoms of the disease, but who test positive for the unusual proteins which can be an early indicator.

It may not seem like science is making much progress, but perhaps a vaccination for Alzheimer’s disease isn’t as far off as you think.
