Double your storage with this $30 Bunnings shelf hack

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at your wardrobe, wishing you could magically conjure up more shelf space, you’re not alone.

For many Australians—especially those living in apartments, downsizing, or simply trying to make the most of their homes—storage is a constant battle.

And let’s be honest, who hasn’t fantasised about a little extra room for those ‘just in case’ jumpers or the shoes you swear you’ll wear again?

Enter Belle Harte, professional organiser and founder of The Organised Abode.

She’s become a bit of a hero for space-starved Australians thanks to a clever, cost-effective Bunnings hack that’s as practical as it is renter-friendly.

Belle’s trick? Custom-cut melamine shelves that can double your storage for around $30—all without the need for a tradie or a toolbox full of intimidating gadgets.

The simple secret: Custom shelves from Bunnings

Belle’s lightbulb moment came while reorganising her own wardrobe.

Frustrated by the ‘wasted space’ between existing shelves, she realised that the pre-drilled holes in most wardrobes are just begging for extra shelves.

The solution? Take one of your current shelves to Bunnings, match it to a melamine board, and have the helpful team in the trade section cut it to size—often for free.

‘I’ve tried just measuring before, but even being 1mm out can mean the shelf won’t fit,’ Belle explains. ‘Bringing the actual shelf in as a template is foolproof.’

Once you’ve got your new shelves, simply pick up some shelf supports—there’s a huge range at Bunnings—pop them into the pre-cut holes, and slide your new shelves into place.

Belle managed to get three shelves from a single sheet of melamine, instantly doubling the usable space in her toddler’s wardrobe.

The total cost? Around $30. Not bad for a solution that looks custom-built and can be easily removed when it’s time to move out.

Why this hack works

What makes this hack so brilliant is its versatility. Whether you’re dealing with an awkwardly shaped linen cupboard, a pantry that never seems to fit enough cereal boxes, or a wardrobe that’s more ‘crammed chaos’ than ‘capsule collection’, this approach can be tailored to fit.

It’s especially handy for older homes, where nothing seems to be a standard size, and for renters who need solutions that won’t upset the landlord.

Plus, it’s a sustainable option. Instead of tossing out a perfectly good wardrobe or buying a whole new storage unit, you’re making the most of what you already have.

And if you’re worried about the do-it-yourself aspect, don’t be—Belle insists it’s ‘absolutely’ something anyone can do, as long as you have your measurements (or a shelf) handy.

Tips for getting the most out of your Bunnings visit

  • Bring a shelf: If possible, take an existing shelf with you. It’s the easiest way to ensure a perfect fit.
  • Know your materials: Melamine is generally the best choice for this hack, as it’s sturdy, affordable, and easy for Bunnings staff to cut.
  • Check cutting policies: Some Bunnings stores limit the number of free cuts per customer, so plan ahead if you need multiple shelves.
  • Ask for the trade team: If you encounter any confusion, ask for someone from the trade section—they’re the experts when it comes to custom cuts.
  • Count your shelves: Work out how many shelves you can get from one board to maximise value.

What the community says

Belle’s video sharing the hack has struck a chord with thousands of Australians.

Others love that it’s renter-friendly: ‘You can just take them out when you move—brilliant!’
