Most people have no idea what ‘Durex’ actually means—do you?

If you’ve ever browsed the supermarket shelves or the pharmacy aisles, chances are you’ve spotted the familiar blue and silver Durex logo.

For many Australians, Durex is a household name synonymous with protection and reliability, and, let’s be honest, there is a bit of awkwardness at the checkout.

But have you ever wondered what the name ‘Durex’ actually stands for? If you think it’s just a catchy brand name, you’re in for a surprise!

The Origins of a Bedroom Staple

Durex has been a mainstay in bedrooms (and wallets, gloveboxes, and bathroom cabinets) for generations. The brand’s roots stretch all the way back to 1915, when it began life as The London Rubber Company.

It wasn’t until 1929 that the company adopted the name Durex—a name that would go on to become the world’s best-selling condom brand.

But here’s the twist: Durex isn’t just a made-up word. It’s actually an acronym, and the meaning behind it might just surprise you.

So, What Does Durex Stand For?

If you guessed ‘During Sex’, you’re not alone. That’s a common misconception, and it certainly makes sense given the product! But the real answer is a little more, well, corporate.

Durex stands for Durability, Reliability, Excellence.

That’s right—three words that sum up the company’s commitment to quality and performance. When the name was chosen nearly a century ago, these were the values the company wanted to embody. And, judging by their global success, it seems to have worked.

A Legacy of Innovation

Durex isn’t just about clever branding. Over the decades, the company has been at the forefront of condom technology and sexual health innovation. Here are just a few milestones:

  • 1953: Durex introduced electronic testing for condoms, setting a new standard for safety and quality.
  • 1969: The world’s first anatomically-shaped condom was launched, designed for a more comfortable fit.
  • 2001: Durex released the first condom that was both ribbed and dotted, aiming to enhance pleasure for both partners.
  • 2010: The brand even teamed up with boyband JLS to launch a special range called ‘Just Love Safe’, encouraging young people to practise safe sex.

Today, every Durex condom is electronically tested for holes and dermatologically tested for comfort, with the company claiming their products outperform global quality standards.

Changing Attitudes and Breaking Taboos

Despite being a staple in sexual health, there’s still a surprising amount of embarrassment and misinformation around buying and using condoms.

A 2023 Durex survey in the UK found that 92 per cent of men admitted to buying the wrong size condom—often opting for a ‘regular’ fit, even when a smaller or larger size would be more comfortable. The reason? Embarrassment about buying the right size.

To help tackle this, Durex launched an online fitting service, encouraging people to find their perfect fit without shame or awkwardness. It’s a small step, but one that could make a big difference in sexual health and confidence.

Why Does This Matter for Over-50s?

You might be thinking, ‘Condoms? At my age?’ But sexual health is vital at every stage of life. In fact, rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among older Australians have been rising in recent years, partly because many people assume they’re no longer at risk.

Whether you’re in a new relationship, dating after divorce, or simply want to stay safe, knowing your options—and the brands you can trust—matters.

Durex’s long-standing reputation for quality and innovation means you can feel confident in your choice, no matter your age or stage of life.

Fun Fact: Durex Around the World

Durex isn’t just popular in Australia and the UK. It’s a global brand, sold in more than 140 countries.

The name might mean ‘Durability, Reliability, Excellence’ in English, but it’s become a universal symbol for safe sex and sexual wellbeing.
