Stop throwing used tea bags: Gardeners swear by this genius trick

If you’re a tea lover, chances are you’ve tossed countless used tea bags straight into the bin without a second thought. But what if we told you those humble little bags could be your garden’s secret weapon?

That’s right—your morning cuppa could be doing double duty, nourishing your plants and helping the environment simultaneously.

For generations, savvy gardeners have looked for ways to make the most of kitchen scraps, from coffee grounds to eggshells and banana peels. Now, tea bags are joining the ranks of household waste that can be transformed into garden gold.

Tea leaves are packed with nutrients that plants love. They’re a natural source of nitrogen, essential for leafy growth and the production of chlorophyll—the green pigment that helps plants turn sunlight into energy.

Tea also contains potassium, which supports strong roots and helps plants cope with stress from drought, pests, or temperature swings. And let’s not forget phosphorus, which aids in flower and fruit production.

Certain teas, especially those with strong scents like mint or cinnamon, can help keep unwanted visitors at bay. The aroma can deter slugs, snails, and some rodents, making your garden less inviting for pests.

The tannins in tea, which give it that slightly bitter taste, have antifungal and antibacterial properties. This means used tea leaves can help protect your plants from some common soil-borne diseases.

Ready to give it a go? Here’s how to make the most of your used tea bags:

1. Compost first for best results.

While you can add tea bags directly to your garden, most experts recommend composting them first. This allows the nutrients to break down entirely and become more available to your plants.

Toss your used tea bags (after removing any staples) into your compost bin and other kitchen scraps.

2. Apply them directly to plants.

If you’re short on time, you can open up the tea bags and sprinkle the damp leaves around the base of your plants or mix them into the soil. This works exceptionally well for acid-loving plants like azaleas, camellias, hydrangeas, tomatoes, and strawberries.

3. Use it to retain moisture.

Tea bags can also help retain moisture in the soil. Bury them near the roots of your plants, and they’ll slowly release water and nutrients as they break down.

4. Make a liquid fertiliser.

Do you have leftover brewed tea (without milk or sugar)? Let it cool, then use it to water your acid-loving plants. Just be sure it’s not too strong or hot, as this can harm delicate roots.

A few words of caution

Not all tea bags are created equal. Many commercial tea bags contain synthetic fibres or even small amounts of plastic, which won’t break down in your garden and could contribute to microplastic pollution. Look for brands that use 100 per cent biodegradable, unbleached paper, or simply empty the leaves out of the bag before use.

Also, remember that tea is naturally acidic. While this is great for plants that thrive in acidic soil, it can harm those that prefer neutral or alkaline conditions—think geraniums, daisies, and hibiscus.

If you’re unsure, check the preferred soil pH for your plants before adding tea leaves.

Repurposing tea bags and other kitchen scraps isn’t just a clever gardening hack—it’s a small but meaningful way to reduce household waste and support a healthier environment. Every little bit helps, and your garden (and the planet) will thank you.
