This subtle driving mistake is causing frustration on the road. Are you guilty?

Driving can be a pleasure or a pain, depending on the day and the traffic conditions. But there’s one particular frustration that can leave even the most patient drivers drumming their fingers on the steering wheel.

Before you start blaming the traffic authorities or the local council for the seemingly endless red light, it might be time to consider that the delay could be your fault, says NSW Road Safety on one of its most recent social media posts.

The post highlighted a common misunderstanding that could be causing unnecessary hold-ups at intersections.

‘Ever feel like a red light is taking forever to turn green? Well… it might be you,’ the post read, then continued, ‘Just kidding—but did you know sensors in the road detect vehicles waiting at stop signals?’

The truth is, many traffic lights aren’t just operating on a timer—they’re smarter than that. Hidden beneath the surface of the road, just at the stop line, are sensors that detect when a vehicle is waiting. These sensors are the key to triggering the light to change from red to green.

‘If you don’t pull far enough forward at the intersection, the sensor might not trigger the signal to turn green. These smart sensors help improve traffic flow, but during peak times, congestion can still happen.’

This revelation has taken many drivers by surprise, with social media comments reflecting mixed reactions.

‘I think a lot of drivers don’t know this!’ exclaimed one commenter, while another confessed, ‘I thought it was timed not sensored.’

‘I thought the little people inside the traffic box fell asleep,’ quipped someone else.

Meanwhile, another person suggested, ‘This information should be added to the Driver’s Handbook and also taught to learners, such as incorporating it in the DKT test as not everyone knows how these traffic lights and their sensors work.’

‘There should also be clearer protocols on what to do / where to report faulty traffic lights as most people don’t know who to call when traffic signals are not operating or are faulty.’

Some seasoned drivers have known about this for years and have even taken it upon themselves to educate others, saying, ‘If it’s taking a while, sometimes I roll back or move forward a bit and it can trigger the squares.’

In contrast, others express frustration at those who do not pull up correctly, with one driver admitting to getting out of their car to inform the person in front to move up.

So, next time you’re stuck at a red light, take a moment to check your position. Are you over the sensor? If not, a small adjustment could make all the difference. And remember, patience is a virtue, especially on the road.

Let’s all do our part to keep the traffic flowing and get everyone home safely.
