This surprising ingredient might be your new wardrobe buddy—why isn’t everyone doing this?

As the mercury drops and we start rummaging through wardrobes for our trusty winter warmers, there’s one item that’s become a staple for many Australians: the humble puffer jacket.

Lightweight, warm, and oh-so-comfortable, it’s no wonder these jackets have become a cold-weather favourite.

But after months in storage, have you ever noticed your puffer jacket smells a bit … off? Maybe it’s a little musty or not as fresh as you remember.

Before you resign yourself to a trip to the dry cleaner (or worse, consider replacing it), there’s a clever hack making the rounds that could save you time, money, and effort.

The secret weapon: Vodka (yes, really!)

You read that right. According to professional organiser and cleaning expert Anita Birges, the answer to your musty puffer jacket woes might be hiding in your liquor cabinet.

While vodka is more commonly associated with cocktails than cleaning, it turns out this clear spirit is a surprisingly effective natural deodoriser.

Anita recently shared her three-step method for reviving puffer jackets, and it’s so simple you’ll wonder why you haven’t tried it before:

1. Lay your jacket flat: Take your puffer out of storage and lay it on a flat surface, like your bed.

2. Spritz with vodka: Pour some vodka (any brand will do—no need to use the top-shelf stuff!) into a spray bottle. Lightly mist the jacket, focusing on areas that tend to hold odours, such as the underarms and collar.

3. Blow-dry to re-puff and refresh: Use a hairdryer to blow air into the jacket’s sleeves, neck, and bottom opening. This not only helps dry the vodka quickly (so you won’t smell like a distillery) but also fluffs up the filling, restoring that signature puffer look.

Some cleaning enthusiasts suggest rolling a rolling pin inside the jacket while blow-drying to help redistribute the filling, but Anita says the hairdryer alone does the trick.

Why does vodka work?

Vodka is a clear, distilled spirit that’s nearly odourless when it dries. Its high alcohol content kills bacteria—the main culprit behind musty smells—without leaving a lingering scent.

Plus, it evaporates quickly and is gentle on most fabrics, making it a safe choice for delicate items like puffer jackets.

Is it safe for all jackets?

While vodka is generally safe for most synthetic and down-filled jackets, it’s always wise to do a spot test on a hidden area first, especially if your jacket has special finishes or embellishments. And remember, moderation is key—a light mist is all you need.

Other tips for keeping your winter gear fresh

Store smart: Always make sure your jacket is clean and completely dry before packing it away for the season. Use breathable garment bags or cotton pillowcases instead of plastic, which can trap moisture and lead to mould or mildew.

Air it out: If your jacket just needs a quick refresh, hang it outside on a breezy day. Sunlight and fresh air are natural deodorisers.

Spot clean stains: For minor marks, use a gentle detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid soaking the jacket, as this can damage the filling.

Check the care label: Some jackets are machine washable, while others require professional cleaning. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

What about other household uses for vodka?

Vodka isn’t just for jackets! It’s a versatile cleaner that can be used to:

  • Deodorise shoes and gym bags
  • Clean glass and mirrors (streak-free shine!)
  • Remove sticky residue from labels
  • Freshen up upholstery and curtains

Just remember: If you’re using vodka for cleaning, opt for the cheapest bottle you can find—there’s no need to waste the good stuff!

What do the experts say?

While Anita’s hack has gone viral, it’s not just a social media fad.

Many professional cleaners and wardrobe experts recommend vodka as a safe, effective way to banish odours from clothing between washes.

It’s convenient for items that can’t be laundered frequently, like winter coats, hats, and scarves.
