Have you ever wondered what it really takes to live a long, happy, and fulfilling life?

Ethel Caterham’s life is nothing short of extraordinary. Born in 1909, she’s lived through six monarchs, 27 prime ministers, two world wars, and countless historical milestones.

When Ethel was born, women in the UK were still nearly a decade away from gaining the right to vote!

Now, she holds the title of the oldest British person ever, according to the ‘Oldest in Britain’ database.

Last August, Ethel celebrated her 115th birthday with a special letter from King Charles, congratulating her on a ‘truly remarkable milestone.’ But what’s even more remarkable is her attitude towards life and the wisdom she’s gathered along the way.

So, what does Ethel credit for her long and happy life? Her advice is refreshingly simple and down-to-earth. On her 115th birthday, she shared: ‘Never arguing with anyone. I listen and I do what I like!’

In a 2020 interview with BBC Radio Surrey, Ethel said: ‘I’ve taken everything in my stride, the highs and lows.’

And when asked what truly matters, she reflected: ‘Family is the most important thing in life, to be able to leave memories with your children and grandchildren. Possessions don’t matter a bit in the end—all you need is someone to look after you.’

Her approach to life is all about positivity, adaptability, and cherishing relationships. She’s also a big believer in saying ‘yes’ to opportunities and maintaining a positive mental attitude.

Fitness expert Diana Moran also weighed in on the secrets to a long and happy life. At 85, Diana is still active and passionate about helping others age well.

She told GB News: ‘I’d like to think that [Ethel] has kept herself both physically and mentally active over all that time, because those are the most important rules: not to slow down or become set in your ways.’

Diana emphasises the importance of staying engaged with the world, especially by spending time with younger people and keeping up with current events. ‘Being with young people keeps my mind active and helps me stay up to date with what’s going on,’ she said.

She also opened up about her own experience with grief after losing her partner of ten years, Robin. ‘All my friends and family are coming to see me. That is one of the secrets to growing older and happier.

Old friends will set you challenges, like ‘come and see us,’ ‘come and travel,’ or ‘let’s talk about the gardening we’re doing.’ These sorts of things can help keep us young and stop us from getting sad, but also from becoming set in our ways.’

While Ethel and Diana’s advice is rooted in personal experience, scientific research backs up many of their points. Studies consistently show that people who stay physically active, maintain strong social connections, and keep their minds engaged tend to live longer, healthier lives.

Ethel’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s not just about the number of years in your life, but the life in your years. Her advice—don’t argue, stay positive, cherish family, and say yes to new experiences—can inspire us all, no matter our age.

Diana Moran’s insights echo this, highlighting the importance of staying active, connected, and open to change. Even in the face of loss or challenge, reaching out to friends and family and embracing new opportunities can make all the difference.

As we reflect on the remarkable lives and insights shared by Ethel and Diana, it’s a gentle reminder that longevity and happiness may come from a mix of mindset, relationships, and staying open to life’s changes.
