Follow the band

Formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for workmen at the colliery, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band is possibly the world’s most famous brass band. For the first time in ten years, it’s making a long awaited return to Australia.

As winner of 96 brass band competitions and stars of the hit film Brassed Off! these sons of Yorkshire display all the power and glory of great brass music in a concert sure to thrill.

Mining communities were shocked in 1992 when the British Government announced the closure of the Grimethorpe colliery, among many others. 17 members of the colliery band were to be made redundant, yet despite all the turmoil, they managed to contest the National Brass Championships in London just five days after the announcement. The triumph of the band was of course immortalised in the 1996 film Brassed Off! starring Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaite and Tara Fitzgerald.

The 29 piece band’s repertoire for the 10 concert Australian tour will include music from the film including Death and Glory, Florentine March and The William Tell Overture. Dates for the tour are as follows:
