Letters from Skye is a beautifully written debut novel by Jessica Brockmole. It is the story of Elspeth Dunn, a poet and fisherman’s wife living on the remote Isle of Skye in Scotland who receives fan mail from a young college student in America, David Graham and is told in an exchange of letters. It commences from David’s very first fan letter in 1912 and continues across two world wars, bringing the secrets of the past to the present.
In 1940 in London a bomb hits Elspeth’s house where she is living with her daughter Margaret, who is engaged to a pilot in the Royal Air Force fighting in the war. Margaret discovers a hidden box of letters between a man she does not know and a woman she discovers is her mother. Elspeth disappears without warning, leaving behind one letter that sets Margaret on a journey to uncover the secrets of her mother’s past.
Letters from Skye is a not only a love story but also a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very last chapter. Jessica Brockmole is definitely an author to watch.
