Steve Bisley, is the much loved Aussie larrikin we know from Mad Max, Water Rats and many more roles in television, film and theatre. He has now expanded his repertoire to author, with his new biography Stillways.
Steve grew up on the central coast of New South Wales, the youngest of three children born to failed market gardeners turned school teachers, Bruce and Pauline. In some ways a typically, idyllic rural childhood spent prawning on a school night to catch dinner, there are also the terrors of bush fires, taken to the extreme with the viewing of the bodies of a family incinerated in their home.
The high and lows of Steve’s childhood are told with a self-deprecating humour. He doesn’t wallow in the hardships, and tells of his difficult relationship with his father with a refreshing candour. He has a real flair for storytelling and some of his tales about growing up on his parents 15-acre property, attending school and moving to the big smoke of Sydney will have you laughing out loud.
It seems to me that the public persona of a cheeky and mischievous larrikin which Steve Bisley displays is very much who he is. But this book shows a man who is not afraid to display a true generosity of spirit and I for one enjoyed discovering this about him.
