Christmas gift guide – free

If you’re on a tight budget, why not try one of these free gift ideas?

Homemade gifts are often the most treasured by their recipients. If you’re on a tight budget or just enjoy getting creative, why not try one of these free gift ideas?

Homemade playdough
Make two batches of homemade playdough using the recipe below, dyeing one batch red and one batch green. Next wash out some old spaghetti jars, and fill them with alternating red and green playdough patties. Finally decorate the jars with some ribbon and give them to the children in your life, or donate them to a Christmas charity sale!

Playdough recipe

1 cups of flour
1/2 cup of salt
2 tablespoons cream of tarter
1 tablespoon of cooking oil
1 cup boiling water
food colouring
Optional: Adding some peppermint oil gives the playdough an extra bounce

Put all the dry ingredients into a bowl and then add the water slowly while kneading until you have a firm dough. To colour add a few drops of food colouring at a time and knead through. Make sure you are wearing rubber gloves for this part of the process. Continue to add food colour a few drops at a time until you are satisfied with the intensity of the colour. Always store your playdough in an airtight container to stop it from drying out.

Create a memory jar
Ask friends and family members to write down their favourite memories of the person receiving the gift – the more the better. Next, write all the memories onto small pieces of paper and put them in a decorated jar. Include instructions to open one memory each day until they run out. This is an especially good gift for people who live further away from friends or family, or for those who travel a lot.
