Free days out with the grandkids

Spending time with your grandchildren provides both them and you with memories that will last a lifetime. While life is an expensive business, having fun with your grandkids doesn’t have to be, so here are five great ways to have a free day out with your little spuds.

Head to the nearest (or furthest) park

For a cheap and easy day out, why not head to a park? A quick Google search will help you find your nearest park or playground. Sometimes, driving a little further is worth it if there’s a particular park that’s known for being special. Simply pack a picnic and make sure to bring a soccer ball or cricket bat too.

Visit the library

State libraries in Australia are great places to take grandchildren to be educated and inspired – they’re also free. Spend the day browsing the shelves and reading together, teaching children how to borrow books and admiring the art collections and exhibits on display.

Go on a scavenger hunt

A scavenger or treasure hunt is a great way to get children outside, be active and connect with nature. Design your own hunt by planting items and clues in your backyard or local park. Or find out if your city hosts an annual children’s scavenger or treasure hunt and make a real day out of it.

Take an audio walking tour

Download a free audio walking tour of your city onto your smartphone and help the grandkids learn about the history, tradition and landscape of their city.

Museum Victoria and Audio Tours Australia both provide free educational apps.

Work together at home

There’s nothing better than the skills passed on from a grandparent to grandchild. Whether you’re passing on an old family recipe to the younger generation or teaching children how to fix a leaky tap, there are dozens of ways you can teach grandchildren valuable lessons (and get help with the housework) without leaving home.
