I have been waging war on the random viewing of TV shows for decades. How often do we turn on the TV to pass the time without even checking to see if there is anything worth watching? How often are they used as babysitters for the kids or grandkids?

I refused to allow TVs in my children’s bedrooms – or mine – and because there was only one television in the house, it actually drew us together. Sure there was some bickering, but it made us consider other options to being couch potatoes.

In my latest skirmish, we are downsizing and rebuilding. My one non-negotiable is that there cannot be a TV in the kitchen/living area. I know it’s the norm and that there are such things as fold-away TVs and cabinets where they can be shut away, but I don’t trust my partner to ever have it shut away. I want peace or music, not the tedious chatter of TV noise.

Why my vendetta? TVs are too easily turned on and not turned off often enough. They are conversation killers. They draw the eye to whatever is on, whether you are interested or not. TVs in restaurants are particularly odious. Why are they there? Bars yes, restaurants no.

My objections focus on the social rather than the health-related issues, but there are dozens of studies that throw up links to health problems.

  • Sitting down to binge watch your favourite TV shows increases your risk of dying from diseases such as Alzheimer’s and kidney disease, according to a study of 8900 adults conducted by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. Researchers found that every extra hour per day spent watching television led to a 12 per cent higher risk of death linked to inflammation, including diabetes, respiratory, cognitive and kidney diseases.
  • A study from Spain found people who watched more than three hours of television a day had double the risk of premature death when compared to those who watched less than one hour per day. When they looked at other sedentary behaviours – such as driving a car and using a computer – they didn’t find the same links with early death.
  • A study titled Viewing time and reduced life expectancy concludes: “On average, every single hour of TV viewed after the age of 25 reduces the viewer's life expectancy by 21.8 minutes.
  • The Journal of Gerontology: Medical Science reported: “Participants who watched TV for five or more hours every day were 65 per cent more likely to have a walking disability 10 years down the line, compared with their counterparts who watched TV for less than two hours every day.”

I rest my case. Talk the talk instead and if you do spend hours in front of the TV, stand up and do some basic stretches at the same time.

    I cant understand anyone watching tv any more. I have my laptop hidden behind my tv connected via a hdmi cable. I also have fast nbn and I download everything. Yes its pirating but I am paying for it.i can watch what ever when ever I want in a few minits.far better than net flicks .its easy to do.

    I totally agree with you. I do not watch TV any more as I prefer to read - either a book or online - listen to music (I often listen on youtube) and occasionally watch a movie. I live alone, but I am not lonely as I am a very active person. I would never put a TV set in my bedroom either.

    I agree sam. often I listen to sbs chill music, its relaxing while I have a sleep on the couch.

    If there is anything worth watching on a commercial station I will turn the TV on muted for 10 to 15 minutes and then I can watch the show from the beginning and fast forward through the ads so I have little interruption while I am watching the show.

    I find my way is good for me because I can watch what I want when I want even though they say it is illegal. I pay $90 a month for unlimited mbs,so I should be able to use them as I wish I think. Even if I download a movie no one is loosing because I would not pay $$$$ to go and see it in a theatre anyway.Even with Netflix and stan you can still only watch what the choices they are showing at the time, My way which is easy when you know how you can watch ANYTHING your little heart desires whenever you want.

    If I did that I would just have a device full of junk and wouldn't have time to watch it let alone remember I recorded it.

    I only ever watch the ABC, or videos. The commercial channels broadcast only crap, and the copious ads thereon are inane.

    with respect vcbear, I think you miss understand what I do, Yes I do download but as soon as it starts downloading I can then start to watch the programme or movie. Its called streaming. And like I said I watch ANYTHING I want when I want, no adds, its great.

    I will add, I use my 60 inch tv screen as a monitor, so every thing is on the big screen not the laptop.

    I only have one TV in my house and I do watch programmes that I am interested in or enjoy. I do not understand people who say they do not watch TV and then say there is only crap on the TV. If you do not watch it then how do you know it is not worth watching. I find some really interesting programmes and I have learnt a lot from them. I also read every day. I do not spend hours in front of the TV as I have a busy life and like to vary my activities, which includes watching TV.

    I have to say that there are occasions when I want only to slump, minlessly, in front of the TV so I do. But other than that a book and the library is my choice.
