See NYE fireworks for free

Do you need some inspiration on how and where to spend New Years Eve and welcome in 2016? Here are our suggestions on where to view the firework spectaculars in Australia’s capital cities.

Sydney

With the focus on the Harbour Bridge, Sydney’s free fireworks are arguably one of the best NYE fireworks displays in the world. There in an early family-friendly session 9pm, and then the usual spectacular at 12am. You just need to be around the Harbour to take it in – whether on land or a restaurant cruise!

Melbourne

Celebrations are usually spread out at various locations around the city. This year you can view them at 9pm in the Yarra Park precinct and the Footscray, Flemington Park area. Then, at midnight, enjoy the rooftop fireworks display across the Melbourne skies. Best vantage points are usually at Docklands, Federation Square and along the Yarra River.

Brisbane

As with many other Aussie capital cities, Brisbane is also holding an earlier fireworks display at 8.30pm along the Brisbane River. Another display will happen at midnight, with both community events emanating from the Southbank area.

Perth

In Perth, NYE fireworks are funded privately or commercially – rather than by the council. Here are some places to take in the colourful display in the sky at midnight:

Adelaide

The Elder Park area is the place to be, with an early family-friendly fireworks display just before 9pm, and then another one at midnight to see out the year.

Canberra

With plenty of lawn and park space around Lake Burley Griffin, and plenty of nearby venues, you can secure yourself a good spot to view the fabulous fireworks, both at 9pm and 12am.

Hobart

This year, the celebration coincides with the Tastes of Tasmania festival – lucky Tasmanians! Of course, the waterfront in Hobart is where you want to be at 9.30pm and, again, at midnight to the see the sky being lit up in a kaleidoscope pf colours.

Darwin

There is an early family fireworks display at 9pm at the Wharf Precinct area, with a big fireworks NYE show to follow at midnight.
