Hooray! It’s time for us to head out again, just in time for the holiday season. After more than a year of choosing comfortable clothes over stylish ones though, it can be a bit of a shock to have to ‘dress up’ again. But now that our social lives our on the way back, it’s time to pick up the mascara and step out in style.
Try column dressing
Wear one colour from head to toe and add a cardigan or jacket that comes to the mid-thigh in a contrasting colour or interesting pattern.
Add one bold accessory and a colourful bag that does not match your shoes. Column dressing gives you a long, lean look, and it takes the eye away from the middle.
Choose a flowy top
A great date night go-to is a feminine and forgiving blouse with a flowy silhouette and a V neckline. You can wear this kind of top over any tighter-fitting base from jeans to dress pants as the peplum style creates a beautiful hourglass shape.
If you’re going somewhere where you know the air conditioning will be pumping, long or three-quarter sleeves can keep you warm without the need for a jacket or sweater.
Show off your best
A special evening out doesn’t have to mean a plunging neckline and a miniskirt, show off what you love about your body.
If you have a defined waist, make it pop by adding a belt. Focus on revealing your long, elegant neck, your toned arms, sleek shoulders or shapely legs.
Loosen up your hair
All hair can be made more beautiful with a little movement – everything from a cropped pixie cut with a tousled look to long, loose curls. Avoid pulling your hair back into a ponytail if you can. Try some beachy waves, curls, layers, a side part or wispy fringe to get some movement into your hairdo.
Jazz up a plain top with some fancy pants
What can you add to a plain T-shirt to get it date night ready? Wide-leg pants in a festive print with some flow and swagger make an easy night-out update.
These pants can suit a variety of tops, from bodysuits to tunics or wraps for the option to tuck in, go untucked or do a front-tucked-only look. Slip on your favourite boots, flats or wedges, and you are set.
Add a blazer for a polished look
A blazer can elevate any pair of jeans or pants and, thanks to the structure of the jacket, you can get away with a plain top underneath too.
A cool white or pink blazer looks fresher than black or navy.
Go for jeans
Jeans are ageless and suit every shape and size. Wear with a crisp white shirt and trench coat for a classic look.
Wear statement accessories
This is the moment your wow earrings and chunky necklaces were made for, so don’t skip them.
Even if you love your everyday studs and delicate chains, bigger, brighter versions focus attention on your face. Try eye-catching drop earrings or embellished hoops to quickly dress up hair that’s pulled back or worn up. Opt for a layered-look necklace to make the most of a V neckline.
Go for a splash of colour
Or go all out with colour. Be brave but start out slow – opt for powder blue before jumping straight to azure.
Practise your make-up look
Blend a dab of eye cream with under-eye concealer for a wide-awake look; add a subtle, shimmery shadow in sand or peach on lids; use a dark gel pencil liner at the upper lash line and inner rim for discreet shaping. Apply eye make-up even under your fabulous glasses.

Have a backup plan
Sometimes you can have the perfect outfit planned but it just doesn’t look or feel quite right on the night. Have a backup so you’re not getting flustered trying to pull together an outfit last minute.
