Five best international beauty tricks

Sometimes you need to think outside the square, or in this case, the country. Different cultures have different beauty secrets, some of them as old as the civilisations themselves.

Here are five of the best beauty secrets from around the world. Even better, you can whip these treatments up with items from your kitchen and try them at home.

Italy

Want beautiful, glossy hair? According to the Italians the secret is yoghurt and olive oil. Mix up your own mask with one cup of plain whole-milk yoghurt and one teaspoon of olive oil. Comb the concoction through your hair after you’ve shampooed and let it sit for five minutes before rinsing it out with cool water.

China

It’s no secret that Asian women often have stunning skin. What you may not know is that in Southeast Asia they use a traditional tamarind skin peel to treat sunspots and acne scars. Try it yourself by combining the pulp of three fresh tamarind pods with honey and water to form a creamy paste. Massage the mixture onto your skin and leave it for five minutes before washing off. For best results make this a weekly ritual.

Egypt

You may have heard that Cleopatra often bathed in milk, however, she wasn’t alone. Many women in Egypt use milk baths for soft, rejuvenated skin. Give it a go yourself, by adding three cups of powdered milk to a warm bath to remove dead skin cells and soften skin.

Mexico

It turns out that avocado is not just delicious but also a fantastic exfoliator. For a fabulous face scrub, dry out a clean avocado seed in the sun over a week. Cut the seed into four pieces before blending into a chunky powder. Mix this powder with your daily moisturiser and massage into your skin whilst in the shower for a smoother complexion.

Dominican Republic

Want stronger nails? The answer lies in garlic according to women in the Dominican Republic. Add a finely chopped clove of fresh garlic to a bottle of clear nail polish and set aside for 10 days. When you apply it to your nails, the strengthening and antibacterial properties of the garlic will make your nails stronger, albeit a bit smelly!

How many of these beauty tricks had you heard of? Do you have any others to share?
