Outfits that must be in Madonna’s film

After dropping hints on social media for weeks, Madonna has confirmed a movie about her life is in the works. Not only that, the music star will be co-writing and directing the project herself.

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” the 62-year-old said in a statement. “It’s essential to share the roller-coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

Given Madonna’s previous forays into acting and directing, which have been met with mixed reviews (to put it mildly), it could be argued the ‘Queen of Pop’ might not be the best person to be at the helm of the biopic, but one thing’s for certain, it’s sure to be a fashion tour de force.

With the Material Girl’s penchant for reinventing herself every few years, we expect she’ll enlist the help of her designer friends to recreate epic outfits from throughout her career, which spans four decades. Here are five iconic looks we hope to see.

1. The wedding dress
Performing hit single Like A Virgin at the 1984 MTV Awards, Madonna donned a decidedly non-traditional wedding dress comprised of a white lace bustier top, tulle skirt, ‘boy toy’ belt, fingerless gloves and white court shoes. The then 26-year-old proceeded to writhe around on stage, cementing her status as the wild child of pop.

2. The Material Girl dress
The next single from the Like A Virgin album, also released in 1984, Material Girl was also a huge hit. In the video, Madonna paid homage to another famous blonde, Marilyn Monroe, mimicking the movie star’s performance of Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend in a hot pink strapless dress with a huge bow at the back, matching opera gloves and, of course, plenty of sparkling jewellery.

3. The cone bra
Arguably the pop queen’s most iconic outfit of all time, the waist-cinching corset with conical bra cups was debuted during her Blond Ambition tour in 1990. Worn over pinstripe trousers, the pale pink underwear-as-outwear piece was created by French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, whom Madonna had personally requested design costumes for the tour.

4. The kimono
Madonna continued to collaborate with Jean Paul Gaultier, enlisting him to create the costumes for 1998 single Nothing Really Matters from her acclaimed Ray Of Light album. For the Japanese-inspired video, the singer was reimagined as a modern-day geisha in a pair of red and black kimonos with graphic eye make-up and long, sleek black hair.

While Madonna has courted controversy many times throughout her career, this video escaped, for the most part, claims of cultural appropriation. We can’t imagine the same thing would happen were it released today.

5. The cowgirl outfit

For eighth studio album Music, released in 2000, Madonna went all in on Americana, sporting a variety of cowgirl-inspired ensembles in music videos, on stage and on the red carpet. Of course, these weren’t your average jeans and denim shirt combos – Madge’s came with masses of sparkling embellishment, sequinned Stetsons and lots of bling.

Are you a Madonna fan? Are you looking forward to watching the film or do you think it’s one to miss? Are there any other outfits you’d like to see?
