SJ has some tips so you only travel with what you really need.
We’ve all done it at least once, you cram the best part of your bathroom into your suitcase only to lock it and find you can’t lift it. Make no mistake – toiletries are heavy. Thankfully, even the most high-maintenance of us can find ways to downsize without compromising our grooming.
Firstly, let’s start with the bathroom. Most hotels provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap and a shower cap these days. If you insist on taking your own shampoo and conditioner, invest in the travel sized bottles so you can carry the amount you need. They are worth their weight in gold when you don’t open your suitcase to find all your hand-picked outfits covered in that bottle of purple conditioner you had to take. On this note, be sure to choose an appropriately sized waterproof toiletry bag so there are no shampoo surprises.
The same goes for face products and toothpaste. It’s all about downsizing. Most supermarkets offer travel sized options of toothpastes, deodorants, moisturisers, face wipes, cotton buds and cotton pads. Use the travel sized bottles to take away your face regime and invest in a good small toothpaste and moisturiser – I recommend Palmer’s Cocoa Butter.
In terms of makeup, try to keep the items you are taking to a minimum. A holiday is a great time to give your skin a break from the heavy duty makeup routine it usually endures. A good tinted moisturiser or BB cream is essential, both Dove’s tinted moisturiser and Garnier’s BB cream are great. Look for one with an SPF factor so you are protecting your skin at the same time. Add a swipe of mascara and you’re set to go. If, however, you can’t bear the thought of going bare, this is a great time to stock up on samples to save space. Who knows, you might even find a favourite new product for when you return.
