What colours are in this winter?

While it’s with sadness we say goodbye to summer, one of the perks of winter has to be the fashion. Unlike summer, when it’s often too hot to wear anymore than a single layer of clothing, winter fashion calls for experimentation and clever ways to wear as many clothes as possible, while remaining stylish.

So which colours should you look out for this year?

I have to say, I really enjoyed the colours that were in fashion for AW16 (the Autumn/Winter 2016 season), and one of the benefits of living in the northern hemisphere is that I can use my crystal ball to pass on, not so magically, what’s in fashion for the coming season in the southern hemisphere. So here’s my ‘foresight’.

1. Navy
No surprises here. Navy is still a clear winner when it comes to dressing up for autumn and winter. Despite what people may think, navy and black do go together. But if you’re not convinced, opt for a more inky shade rather than one with a blue undertone. And if someone tells you that you can’t wear navy with black, stop talking to them – you don’t need that type of negativity in your life!

2. Burgundy
Burgundy is a seriously beautiful shade, and I was absolutely thrilled when I started seeing this hue popping up everywhere. The perfect complementary colour to black and navy, it also works well with lighter shades, such as white and baby pink. Another benefit is that burgundy will remind you of red wine – possibly why I was so drawn to it!

3. Teal
As you may have gathered, jewel colours are having a major moment this season. Which is definitely something to celebrate – after all, what’s not to love about their opulence? Not as harsh as green, teal is arguably more flattering and much easier to pull off. Opt for a dress or special top in this colour; it’s a perfect way to break up black.

4. Metallics
Gold, silver, rose gold – you name a metallic and it’s in fashion this season. A trickier trend to pull off, metallic can be embraced through accessorising. For example, metallic sneakers (or a bag) are perfect for accompanying an otherwise plain outfit, particularly during the day.

5. Pastels
While you can’t go wrong with white and cream, baby pink and dove grey are also great colour choices this season. A soft pink jacket looks great styled with black and grey, and you can use grey with white and black to create clever monochrome combinations for a winning ensemble. Feeling risqué? Give nude a go. It goes perfectly with camel – the ideal colour for a coat this winter.
