The loving couple

Peter Leith is 89 and describes himself as ‘half-deaf and half-blind’. But he has never been one to waste a minute and is writing a series of true short stories called Aspects of Ageing. We love them and he has kindly agreed to share them with YourLifeChoices members. The first is called The loving couple.

They walked ahead of me in The Pines Shopping Centre concourse.

She, a chubby little white-haired old lady, walking stick in her left hand, hobbled slowly along.

Firmly holding her right hand was a dark-haired small boy, perhaps eight years old.

They made a lovely picture and, catching up with them, I excused myself and told them so.

She smiled, thanked me and introduced me to her grandson Robert.

Robert and I shook hands and with a serious expression on his face, he told me: “I don’t need someone to hold my hand but Nana does.”

His grandmother just smiled.
