Changing channels: Matt Doran takes on a new adventure overseas

The Australian television landscape is ever-changing, and one of its familiar faces, Matt Doran, is no exception to this rule of evolution. After bidding farewell to his role on Weekend Sunrise, the seasoned TV host is embarking on an exciting new chapter that will see him cross the Pacific for a fresh start in the United States.

Matt Doran, alongside his wife Kendall Bora, is set to make a significant move to Los Angeles. This decision comes on the heels of less than two months after his departure from the popular morning show. Kendall, who has been a pivotal figure behind the scenes as the executive producer of Today on Channel Nine, is stepping into a prestigious role as the network’s US bureau chief.

The announcement, which was shared with staff on Tuesday and later confirmed by Fiona Dear, Nine’s director of news and current affairs, has sparked interest and support from colleagues and viewers alike. Dear praised Kendall’s impressive tenure at the Today Show, highlighting her role in spearheading transformative projects and expressing excitement for her future achievements as the head of Nine’s famed US bureau.

But what does this mean for Matt Doran? While his exact plans in LA remain shrouded in a bit of mystery, there are strong indications that he is looking to return to his roots in crime reporting and documentary-making. During his heartfelt farewell announcement back in November, Matt hinted at this new direction, stating that his background in crime and documentaries was calling him back.

Before his stint on Weekend Sunrise, Matt joined Channel Seven in 2017 as a crime reporter and contributed to the current affairs program Sunday Night. His journalistic prowess and engaging presence on screen led him to the Weekend Sunrise role in 2019, where he became a weekend staple for viewers across the nation.

With Matt’s departure, the question of who would fill his shoes on Weekend Sunrise was a hot topic. While names like James Tobin, Sam Mac, and Larry Emdur were floated as potential successors, the network ultimately chose David Woiwod for the role. Woiwod, who has a rich history with Sunrise as the resident Melbourne reporter and a five-year tenure as 7NEWS‘ US Bureau Chief, returned to Australia and seamlessly transitioned into his new position on December 16, quickly winning over the audience.

We wish Matt and Kendall all the best in their endeavours and look forward to the impactful stories they will undoubtedly bring to audiences, both in Australia and internationally.
