Mind Your Own Retirement Episode 14

Learner drivers have L-plates and provisional drivers have P-plates. Should senior drivers be forced to display S-plates? As we age, our driving skills may diminish, but our experience might make up for any losses in that department. When to hang up the car keys is a hotly debated issue. On Mind Your Own Retirement today, co-hosts Janelle and ‘Deeksie’ talk with motoring writer Paul Murrell about whether S-plates really are a possibility for older drivers.

They also ask author and retirement expert Bruce Manners some pointy questions about life after work and how best to navigate the journey – or not.

And Liv offers some expert tips on how to get the most out of your travel budget, including her views on budget airlines and whether hostel accommodation is suitable for older travellers.

What about "D" plates for convicted drug users? "A" plates for alcoholics who drive while drunk? "IT" plates for those persistent users of digital devices while driving? The mind boggles with possibilities for labelling groups of drivers who up to now cause more havoc on the road than most seniors. When pedestrian deaths and injuries of seniors are removed from the senior road toll our road statistics reveal a very different story - one of responsible, careful drivers who have a low incidence of fatalities behind the wheel.

As long as they can get away with fudging the figures and blaming 'older' drivers nothing will ever change.
When an older person does have a car accident it's all over the news. Very, very seldom are other accidents mentioned unless there is a death involved.

Spot on Buggsie. I might add that whoever thought this one up should have to drive with "DH" plates

Are you going to have licence plates for drug users, criminals and alcoholics? Also licence plates for paedophiles, hoons etc.

Now that is an idea the government should be looking at and hitting on seniors all the time

I know that there are some that should have an S plate but others who are still OK, another slap on the retiree's. So much for the golden years of life. How much more demeaning can older citizens take

Why should we be singled out? It's discrimination!

How about we have plates numbered 1 to 13, 1 means you have 1 point left on your license, and 13 means you have all your points. I am no saint, I guess I would be an 10.

If this is all about reducing deaths on roads then I would strongly suggest a speed limiter on cars owned by ' L' and 'P' plate drivers. Almost every month we see horrific deaths caused by young men.
