Jennene Buckley

Whether you work outside the home or you’re a full-time carer at home, you probably wear several other hats: nurse, sitter, cook, bookkeeper, driver and assistant. Keeping track of it all and getting it all done requires a to-do list of epic proportions, and even the most organised person can occasionally tip into a state of carer chaos. Your smartphone or tablet can be a great help and there are many simple, affordable apps to help people get and stay organised.

The tech team at Feros Care has provided its favorite 12 apps for menu planning, health, safety, money management and organising your and your family’s lives.

Staying Organised

CarePartners Mobile

For those who share caring responsibilities amongst two or more people. The carers all have the app installed on their phone and create a ‘community’, where they can chat to the other carers in their group to exchange information about the care recipient, add items to a task list, delegate responsibility and claim responsibility for other tasks.  This way they can also see who is responsible for what, and it allows everyone to have greater peace of mind in knowing all required tasks are being attended to.

MyFitnessPal is basically a food diary. You tally up your meals and intake throughout the day, and you can use it to track calorie intake. The app has a huge database of foods, including the good stuff nature provides, such as fruit, as well as packaged goods. You can also scan barcodes of products and it will add them to your list. Just select a serving size and add it to your daily entries. If you can’t find the meal that you prepared, you can ‘build’ it by adding ingredients together.

You can also track how much water you drink, how much exercise you’ve done and, when you complete your entry for the day, it will give you a summary based on the goals you entered when you first set up the app.

Have a live-time shopping list that you add to as you go, and sync the list with your loved one’s/carer’s phone! You can just keep adding items to it as you run out during the week, and the person doing the shopping for you will automatically know to purchase these items. And, if they pick one or two items up in the week for you, they can cross it off the list and that will transfer back to your list. It also sorts your groceries by type to help when walking up and down the supermarket aisles.

You can scan ingredients from your own pantry and Dinner Spinner can you show recipes containing the ingredients you have on hand. You’ll turn that forgotten can of crushed tomatoes hiding in the pantry into an amazing dinner. You can filter by dietary requirements (gluten, vegetarian etc.), select ingredients you have or want/need to cook with, and Dinner Spinner does the test.

To top it off, you can build a shopping list from the recipes you want to complete. You plan a week of meals from the comfort of your couch, the app builds your shopping list, and off you go the supermarket.
