Blood type linked to higher risk of heart attack or stroke

Your blood type may influence your likelihood to have a heart attack or stroke.

Blood type linked to heart attack/stroke

People with the blood groups A, B or AB are nine per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke, according to new research from the University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands that looked at data from 1.3 million people.

The A, B and AB blood groups make up 51 per cent of the Australian population.

People with A, B and AB blood have higher levels of a blood-clotting protein and this is linked to higher levels of stroke and heart attack.

It had previously been suggested that there was a link between non-O blood types and risk of heart disease, with a 2015 study - finding people with blood type A had higher cholesterol than other blood groups.

"It could be that people with an A blood group should have a lower treatment threshold for dyslipidaemia or hypertension, for example. We need further studies to validate if the excess cardiovascular risk in non-O blood group carriers may be amenable to treatment," said University Medical Centre Groningen lead researcher Tessa Kole.

Do you know your blood group? Will you raise these findings when discussing cardiovascular or stroke prevention the next time you visit your doctor?

What a load of old codswallop! My mother who died last year aged 101 and 59 days, was A+.
She was still playing bowls at 95, and going to the Bowling Club until she was well into 100.
I can recall when these scientific types told us that Coffee was bad for you, caused all sorts of problems, then it came out that was the case, if you drank 100 cups per day.
Enjoy life and live it to the fullest, for we are all heading for the Great Void eventually.

What the! The research findings were a 9% greater chance of heart attack or stroke, a little understanding of statistics would help. Nowhere was there a mention of not living to a great age. As for the coffee bit, just shows also complete ignorance of scientific methods.

As for your disgust of science then go live in a cave, as everything around you is supplied to you by the work of scientists over the centuries. You must hate the technology you used to post your comment.

I totally agree FEDUP. Why bother with rubbish articles like this to depress everyone. Live life to the full by leading a healthy active lifestyle and just be too busy to have a heart attack. I think most of our problems are genetic and good luck doing anything about that.

My hypertension has been managed by a well-credentialed specialist for a couple of decades now and I seem to be doing fine (regularly reviewed medication regime and gym five times a week helps, as does a healthy diet and radical cut-back of booze in the past couple of years). But perhaps surprisingly in light of this article, no-one has ever asked my blood type and nor does it appear in the many letters that go backwards and forwards between my GP, nephrologist and cardiologist - which always list my medical history.
Then again, a sample of 1.3 million people in Europe is hardly global, is it? - so maybe I'll just thank my lucky stars that I'm O+ and get on with life!

I cannot believe any scientific study because they are all conflicting/For example drinking coffee us bad for you now scientists claim that drinking 4 cups of coffee can reduce stroke and heart attack. The majority of health problems are caused by our genes and can be helped by leading a healthier lifestyle.

Blood pressure. Just a word of warning if you have low blood pressure then most of those poisons prescribed will lower it even further as a side effect. Most doctors assume every one has high blood pressure so do not take this into account. Result is that you collapse and end up in an ambulance taken to hospital with everyone shaking their heads as it is the last thing they will think of.

Be careful of the white coat syndrome and most monitors have a false reading the first time so a second reading is necessary. I have one here that I occassionly use to prove I'm OK to my toy boy.
