During the weekly meeting of Coalition MPs and senators yesterday, a heated discussion over cut-price milk turned sour when NSW Liberal senator and farmer Bill Heffernan called Victorian Liberal senator Scott Ryan a ‘*****wit’ according to sources from The Age.

The discussion descended even further when Victorian Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella chose to defend Senator Ryan by telling 68 year old Senator Heffernan 'Why don't you go and pop your Alzheimer's pills.''

These comments could not have come at a worse time with Coalition Leader Tony Abbott opening the weekly conference by congratulating his team for its ''exemplary discipline'' while the Labor Party tore itself apart over the past week.

Should MPs and senators be expected to act with respect for their own colleagues?
Were the comments from both senators inappropriate?

definitely inappropriate!!! in any other workplace the behaviour MPs often exhibit would result in dismissal. how can these highly paid, foulmouthed idiots pass laws protecting the rest of the Australian workforce from such bullying and bad behaviour not see that they should be leading by example? do they not see the hypocrisy in their behaviour?

Most definately. My goodness, they are our country's leaders, and I would expect respect, no bullying, no mobile phones in parliament. Any wonder teenagers, young adults and little kids have such disregard for police, parents, and lack of tolerance for anyone.
Time for them to lift their game and realise being a politician is not a game it is a job and not only is our country watching but other's too - and I bet they think the same as we do. It's an absolute disgrace - respect and old fashioned values need to come back from the top before it will occur down the bottom!

Sophie Mirabella can be quite a nasty mouthed young woman. I find her quite distasteful at times.
