Dick Smith tackles immigration

Outspoken entrepreneur Dick Smith is launching a $1 million advertising blitz on the ‘hazards’ of overpopulation and calls for an increase to company tax.

The controversial ad will feature the voice artist behind the 1980s ‘Grim Reaper’ ads warning Australians about AIDS. It will call on the Government to more than halve immigration numbers, and raise company tax to 45 per cent from the current 30 per cent.

“It’s a frightening ad that shows what’s going to happen if we have endless population growth – it’s going to destroy Australia as we know it today,” Mr Smith told ABC radio on Monday.

“Every single Australian family has a population plan – they don’t have 20 children, they have the number of children they can give a good life to,” he said.

“But our politicians have no equivalent for the country.”

Mr Smith denied his new ad campaign was racist, declaring that his major concerns were overpopulation.

“It’s nothing to do with racism,” he said.

“The arrivals that are coming in are basically wealthy. I’ve got friends that are coming in from South Africa, UK, from China; they’ve come in with a lot of money.

“They buy a house instantly – that basically will mean our children and grandchildren won’t have jobs.”

Mr Smith supported Pauline Hanson at the last Federal Election and said he wants to see the immigration intake reduced to 70,000 per year.

The former Australian of the Year is also keen to see the wealthiest one per cent pay more tax, calling for an increase in the company tax rate to 45 per cent.

“The trickle-down effect is a complete lie, the wealthy become wealthier the poor poorer,” Mr Smith said.

What do you think? Should Australia cut its immigration intake or is our diversity our strength? Should the company tax rate be higher? Is Dick Smith angling to be Australia’s Donald Trump?
