Facebook has for years been keeping records of your smartphone activity, including the duration of phone calls, contact numbers and the text messages you’ve sent and received.
The discovery was made by Android smartphone users after downloading their personal Facebook archive information, which revealed the logs of data.
Android users who installed Messenger or Facebook Lite may have inadvertently given Facebook permission to store their call and message logs, which resulted in creating logs of this information.
Apple iPhone users are safe as the operating system does not allow the silent collection of call data.
Facebook has confirmed the reports and responded publicly stating that all the recorded information was uploaded to secure servers and never sold or shared. Furthermore, the information collected did not include content of the calls or text messages.
In a statement to Ars Technica, Facebook stated that the call log was “a widely used practice to begin by uploading your phone contacts”.
