Neuschwanstein Castle
Sleeping Beauty’s castle was inspired by this stunning structure located in Bavaria, Germany. The castle was built in the late 19th century as an homage and retreat for composer Richard Wagner. Since then, it has opened to the public and has been visited by over 61 million people.
The interior is as marvellous as the exterior. Why visit Disneyland when you can see the real thing?
Cave of the Crystals (Cueva de los Cristales)
This cave looks like a chapter from Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth or perhaps Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Located in Mexico, the cave was uncovered by mining operations and is home to some of the world’s largest crystals up to 12 metres long. Perfect or ‘fairytale like’ conditions allowed the crystals to grow over 500,000 years to monolithic proportions. See more photos at National Geographic.

The St. Paul Winter Carnival
This winter carnival, held in Minnesota, USA, is a sight to behold. Held in January each year, the festivities themselves are astounding but the big attraction is the Ice Palace. Constructed every few years, the palaces (and their destructions) are incredible are constructed entirely from ice.
