Pay-as-you-go roadside assistance

Being stuck on the side of the road watching steam pour from your radiator is enough to make you pay through the nose each year for roadside assistance – even if it only happens to you once. But add the total cost of the years you’ve paid for this type of service, then add the total times you’ve actually used it and, for many people, the convenience of roadside assistance becomes an almost unnecessary expense. That is, until you remember the time you ran out of fuel in the rain one cold, cold night all those years ago…

It’s as if someone finally put their thinking cap on and, with a little inspiration from über-type companies, came up with ingenious smartphone app, gotU, which basically acts as roadside assistance ‘on call’. It’s a pay-as-you-go roadside help service that takes aim at yet another yellow-coloured-car monopoly and will no doubt change the face of the industry.

Not only does the app offer PAYG roadside assistance, but there are no ongoing fees or annual membership costs.

Battery flat? A jump-start will cost you $89. Flat tyre? You’ll pay just $89 for someone to change it for you. Locked keys in your car? That’ll be $99 to unlock it. And if you run out of fuel, you can have 10 litres delivered straight to your fuel tank for $99. Even towing your broken down jalopy up to 10km will cost you $99.

You can also pinpoint the service vehicle closest to you, so you can track how far off it is from helping you.

gotU is being trialled in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and hopes to go national by the end of 2017. It is available free for Apple and Android devices.
