Most often associated with work wear, the simple shirt is far more versatile than you may think. Whether you opt for classic cotton, soft silk, or casual denim, here’s how to wear any shirt in five different ways.
1. Classically cool
For a chic, relaxed look, wear untucked with skinny jeans and roll up your sleeves. Pair with loafers or ballet flats during the day, and then dress up the ensemble for evening by switching to statement heels or boots. This look can also work with leggings, provided the shirt is long enough so that the leggings are not pretending to be pants!
2. Button up
For a slightly more sophisticated style, unroll your sleeves and wear your shirt fully buttoned with a statement necklace sitting flush against the collar.
3. Layered look
…the bandwagon and wear a jumper over your shirt. This works best when the jumper is relatively fitted to counterbalance the looser fit of the shirt. Cropped jumpers are also a great way to pull off this layered look. Pair with trousers, jeans, or a pencil skirt.
4. Open season
For a casual ensemble, wear your shirt unbuttoned over a singlet or t-shirt with jeans or shorts. This is a great option for warmer weather; think of your shirt as a jacket for the day and layer away! Proportion wise, this look works best if the bottom layer isn’t too baggy or shapeless. Consider tucking your singlet or t-shirt into your pants and accentuate your waist with a belt. You can also wear your shirt unbuttoned over a dress for daytime. Just add sandals and you’re good to go.
5. Skirting around
The perfect contrast to a full or floaty skirt. Roll up your sleeves and tuck your shirt into an A-line or midi skirt for a polished outfit. If your shirt isn’t sitting well around your mid section, try knotting it and then tucking it in so it doesn’t bunch up. Complete the look with a pair of pretty flats or heels, depending on your mood.
My staple is a white cotton shirt from Sussan. Similar here:
