The leaderless country*

Meaningless debate and suppository gaffe confirm we are indeed leaderless.

The leaderless country

So yesterday we had the wash-up from the great debate and the ‘news’ which followed. It was disheartening, to be kind, and gobsmackingly awful, to be more frank.

First we had the summary of the supposed polling/responses to the not-so-great debate in the Melbourne Age. And what a wild swing they revealed with Mr. Rudd empathically winning on the Ten network and equally emphatically losing with Channel Seven. Mark Kenny, the political writer for its sister publication The Sydney Morning Herald described the debate as a ‘crushingly dull affair’, more ‘mock and bore’ than ‘shock and awe’, a ‘male talkfest which was a turnoff for voters’. An even better wrap up came courtesy of Greens MP, Adam Bandt, on the ABC’s QandA when he described the debate as ‘drab meandering around increasingly diminishing points of difference.”

They are both right, of course.

The only vaguely interesting sidenote was the suggestion that PM Rudd was cheating by having notes on the podium. And in an attempt to be generous, Mr. Abbott jumped in where angels fear to tread, declaring that no one can be a suppository for all wisdom.

Of course he meant to say ‘repository’, but the slip made for great headlines and even better twittersphere references on #suppository and #enema.

A truly dark day for politics in a leaderless country.

What did we learn in The Age

Not a lot, in The Sydney Morning Herald

Tony Abbott makes CNN headlines in a way he will wish he didn’t

(* with thanks to Senor Oso, you know who you are)

Opinion: No political choices

Dear Kevin and Tony,

Well congratulations. This election will be the 17th in which I have voted since I turned 18 in 1972. And between the two of you and your hapless followers, there is not a hope that I can front up and support either party.

On 3 December that year I enthusiastically gave my vote to the Labor Party – agreeing that it was time for a new direction. And I even got to see the great man himself, the towering figure of Gough Whitlam at an old style town hall meeting in the electorate of Casey, in outer eastern Melbourne beforehand. Whitlam was swept to power in an euphoric rush of hope, dreams and plans for a bigger and better Australia. These, of course, were dashed when his political nemesis, Malcolm Fraser, denied supply and forced an election in 1975 that delivered a Liberal coalition government until 1983, when Bob Hawke (AKA a drover’s dog) fought his way to power in just 31 days. Since then we’ve had four Prime Ministers – Paul Keating, John Howard, Kevin Rudd (times two) and our first female leader, Julia Gillard. And each election I have attended a local polling booth with a firm sense of mission and purpose.

But well done, guys, the 2013 Election is fast approaching and I am faced with the choice I previously failed to understand – no choice. I used to think people who voted informally were copping out, but this election, I simply cannot endorse either of the major parties.

I was happy with the minority Labor Party, supported by the Independents and the Greens, and the life affirming, life-changing legislation they pumped through despite the strongest efforts of Dr. No’s, AKA Mr. Abbott, Mr. Hockey and Ms. Bishop. But on the last day of Parliament the man who had actively destabilised his own party had his revenge, and the hard working Ms. Gillard was relegated to the back benches with a very sanctimonious Mr. Rudd now heading the party of social justice.

Give me a break.

I look to the other side of the house seeking inspiration, and quite frankly, there is none. Despite half-hearted attempts by the Canberra Press Gallery and the odd insistent independent journalist, no member of the coalition will go near the water when it comes to revealing the true costs of its promises. All they can do is don their blue ties and chant the same tired three-word slogans, promising to ‘balance the books’, ‘stop the boats’ and ‘build new roads’ – all at once, apparently.

To say I find this depressing is a massive understatement.

Yes, I know, I can turn to independents or greens, but I like to think my vote will support a party which is capable of forming government. A hope which seems increasingly unlikely as the days go by.

So, Kev and Tony, I (and my vote) have ‘gotta zip’. If you come up with any original ideas, or funding detail, feel free to get in touch.

What about you? What do you think? Are we left with no decent alternatives for 7 September?

The Monopoly Media Magnate who decided to not bother with a PUPPET politician and simply do it himself.

What a mess he got Italy into....... took how far down that country went.

You can draw a very BIG comparison with MURDOCH and his marionette ABBOTT.... how far down will he take Australia. I know we are currently on top of the world, thanks to RUDD and the Labor Party BUT it will be so easy for these self interested fools to drop us off the top to the bottom.

What has our national debt blown out to? OOOoo just 400 billion. Thats OK we have a AAA rating. Does that include the 80 billion debt in Queensland? Wow what a prosperous nation we have become. Don't worry be happy.

arrrhhh, surfer (with a small 's') where is your mate.... Surfer (with a capital 'S'), NOT his SHIFT I gather!

You keep spinning this debt thing, you are scraping the bottom of the barrel to try and pin something on Rudd and the Labor Party. It is a DEFICIT old thing and NOT a DEBT and it is the SMALLEST DEFICIT in WORLD terms, as you know very well.

Governments use a DEFICIT to manage the economy and given that we are at the very TOP of the WORLD, or the BEST in the WORLD, if you like, they have managed this country very, very, very, very, very, very, very WELL & have kept our DEFICIT very, very, very, very, very LOW, at the same time as ensuring we have a AAA credit rating from all three credit rating agencies..... the USA & UK, CANNOT match this.

YES, as you very well know surfer and Surfer..... WE ARE A VERY PROSPEROUS NATION but the WEALTH of this nation is the most SPREAD OUT amongst the people as any other nation on earth.

We are the most EGALITARIAN nation in the WORLD and that is why all the CORPORATE PARASITES are wriggling into Australia, so that they can SUCK out OUR wealth and put it into their own pockets. Murdoch is one of those CORPORATIONS and Abbott is his marionette.

Hi Again, Just in from work. Have you checked out Queenslands rating lately. We are broke through Captain Bligh. We seem to be at odds re debt and deficit. Perhaps we just call it borrowed money. We have to pay interest on borrowed money. Do you know how much interest per week is going out? We are going downhill fast and you know it. My ancestors would be horrified. You also have to pay borrowed money back. Keating referred to us as a banana republic long ago when things were lots better.

Natural disasters are a real hamper to a countries well being..... you think Bligh should have told everyone NOT to BOTHER and let Queenslanders suffer and not give aid or provide emergency and other service????

    Yeah..... you seem that sort.

My response to the wages fiasco is Campbell Newman was not responsible for setting that, an independent body was. Newman had enough under his hat to not accept. In Queensland, most people appreciate what Campbell Newman is doing and you might have noticed the jobs growth recently we had here. He is trying to get our tripple A rating back after Bligh/Beattie wrecked it.

HI surfer (with a small 's') ..........Talking about money:

It would seem that about ALL countries on the Planet are facing MASSIVE DEBTS.
Can you tell me - just to satisfy my curiosity - to which country is all this money owed and how did they acquire these ZILLIONs of dollars.

Maybe Australia could copy their lead/ideas and become one of the "Financially Secure" countries again. Our kids would than not be "In Debt" from the day they are born!
Then You & I and many others would not have to worry about - obviously - minor details like National Debt!

Hi Patriot, Well this out of control debt is from treasury's figures and is probably more than is portrayed, as you cannot trust krudd to allow the real figure to be published before an election. We should not align ourselves with some other countries as they are in dire trouble and going belly up. Our problem is the rate of borrowing which has happened over recent years. It is growing at a rate only comparable with two other countries. All we have to know is Krudd inherited a credit of 19 billion from Howard. We will have hit 400 billion by the end of this year. Don't forget we have had record income during this time, unlike other countries. This debt is growing at the rate of 3 billion a week. What I want to know, is how long it will take to pay off, and how much a week in interest it is costing us. In bringing down budgets, surely this is the first figure we have to know. In Queensland, we were horrified that in that state alone, our debt had grown to 80 Billion through mismanagement by the Beattie/Bligh govt. We did not know the real result till after the election. I expect we will have the same situation with the present Krudd/Greens set up.

HI surfer (with a small 's') ....................... I'm glad that you have taken my response seriously as such action allows for some further explanation.

You unfortunately have neglected to respond to all issues raised. In order to understand the "Local Issues" it is essential to understand the "Global Issues" as they directly influence the local issues.

Yes AB sold the table silver (Qld Railways) and I was very P...ed off about that.
Yes the labour government racked up a lot of debt. However, I would not trust the figures of the "Can Do Dude" either as they may be a "Worst Scenario" case just to get us - the taxpayer - to not object when the new NLP government squeezes the crap out of us (the taxpayer) and Pollies take all "The Actions" themselves only. "Stuff the Voters!".

The whole concept of economy & the growth there off is "Cockeyed"!
For instance, let's take the recent cyclone(s) in Qld.
The ultimate damage caused by these Natural events ran into the Billions!
However, whilst it ""Absolutely Wrecked" the lives of many families and business owners, it increased the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the state of Qld. And so - as GDP is a measure of the economic activity of Qld. and an indicator of wealth - these Natural Disasters (apparently) made Qld more prosperous !?!?!?!?!?!?
So, whilst "Absolute Misery" is created for many Queenslanders, the economy is booming. This represents the "Dog eat Dog" attitude of our current system which is unfair, incorrect and not of benefit to 99% of the normal citizens. IT STINKS!!!

so, WHILST THE ABOVE IS THE CURRENT REALITY, I SUGGEST THAT SOMETHING FISHY IS GOING ON! Maybe the method of measuring the wealth of the state not quite correct as it seems to be indicating prosperity whilst many families and business people go broke and/or bankrupt.

Similar to the above are the Exxon Valdez & the BP Oilspil just to name a few!

Below I have provides a few links with educational videos reflecting the currently unfortunately "Status Quo".
As many of the ideas presented are potentially alien and therefore possibly difficult to accept, I suggest to download and watch these videos until the concepts become less confronting and the principal ideas better understood.

I believe that, once the principles outlined are understood, it will be seen that - no matter weather we're getting into debt or out of debt,
the consequences are unpalatable for the normal Australian (99% of us).
That is so whilst we are paying the total cost of the whole excercise!

Patriot i beg to differ i lived in mission beach during cyclone yazi there was a lot of destruction in mission beach, cardwell, and tully and there was also a lot of money donated by other people in different states of australia and overseas. the federal government gave us $1000 dollars and i have to say that anna bligh wa full of it no help given much by her government except she took charge of the money as usual organised by mackinroth. mission beach today is still struggling and a lot of business went down the tube. same as the floods sure there was buildings being repaired but being oiut of action does not help a business and lots of homes, etc were covered by insurance. the bligh government held onto the donations stating that they wanted to make sure it was going to the right people and a lot of money was put into revenue. they cyclone clean up was badly organised by shannon and keating and left a lot to be desired. yes i am not happy with campbell newman but by god he leaves rudd for dead. i shudder everytime he comes on t.v. look at me look at me . just think what we could be doing with all the money that this government has wracked up and we have nothing to show for it. if your children have children just think of what you have cheated them out of. we could have funded the schools better hospitals, the disability etc if things were only handled better. not to mention the queensland payroll debacle. us queenslanders deserved better and now we have another show pony in beattie words cant describe how i feel about him just ask the people of atherton what they think of him . i should know i lived on the tableland. as to all the building repairs a lot of this was not given to locals but contracted down south

Rudd is actually NOT a dud because whether you like him or not, HIS economic short, medium and long term plans, followed by Gillard, has put Australia at the VERY TOP of the WORLD.

He has worked very hard and poor Kaye's SOUR GRAPES over Gillard should be more directed at MURDOCH and his disgusting misogynist press coverage of Gillard, rather than Rudds effort to regain his position as leader of this country. Rudd had a mission and he was not allowed to complete it, again because of MURDOCH's disgusting support of HUGE MINING CORPORATIONS. You really cannot blame him for wanting to regain his position.... if you look at what happened to him and how you would feel in the same instance. I feel for Turnbull as well... he is in a worse situation than Rudd, as he has to trail around after a total FOOL and pretend he supports him & doesn't do so well, not showing his distaste sometimes.

I am glad Gillard got in, she is the FIRST female prime minister, she was an atheist, and she was unmarried but with a partner. Not to mention that she was intelligent, a good leader and an exceptional negotiator. PMs come and go.... some we don't want to go but that is the name of the game.

Why is it that we can NOT give credit to RUDD when he has put AUSTRALIA's ECONOMY at the very TOP of the WORLD.

This is true, little Australia, is above the USA, UK, Europe and the rest of the world!!!!! Not only above them, Australia has ticked ALL the GOOD economic boxes ALL at the SAME TIME..... this has NEVER been done by any other government IN THE WORLD.

RUDD and the Labor Party has achieved these incredible feats and we are being kept in the dark about it because of MURDOCH and his need to ensure that Australian households do NOT get Labor's NBN.
Murdoch owns 70% of our Corporate (foreign) Owned Media which is SELF-REGULATED and they sit on their own disciplinary board - hence, this Corporate Media can LIE, BIASLY DIRECT Australians on how to vote (for Murdoch's personal GAIN), NOT inform Australians about what the rest of the WORLD population knows...... that Australia is the BEST ECONOMY in the WORLD.

This achievement has been done when the rest of the WORLD was and still flailing and there is WORSE to come.

Do you really want Murdoch (through Abbott) to run this country...... he was also heavily involved with the USA republicans as well and look where that country is now (at the very bottom) AND RUDD has PROVEN HIMSELF through and through.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIKE HIM BUT for GOODNESS SAKE, give the man some CREDIT for the INCREDIBLE position he has placed AUSTRALIA.

Labour put us at the TOP of the World and spread the wealth amongst Australians BUT still no credit where credit is due.

I am for fairness & justice ...... Labor deserve to be re elected.... I will vote for them ONLY because of their extremely good management of this country... I am NOT a Labor person (I am a member of the WikiLeaks Party).

The WORST of the GFC hasn't even struck yet and I want a party that have proven themselves to be good managers to be in place when the sh*te hits the fan.

DON'T LET MURDOCH TELL YOU HOW TO THINK!!!! MURDOCH wants to CONTROL the wealth & power in Australia & YOU are getting in his way! So make sure you do & don't vote for Murdoch's party.

I agree with much of the Green agenda, but fear that they and their followers tend to go too far on the conservation path (example - the resistance to the forest peace agreement in Tassie. I can't understand Labor voters with comments like "why change, both parties are just the same". We have just been through one of the worst times in Australian history - the last one was "the recession we had to have " and yet people still cannot see the forest for the trees. Don't you realise that we now owe billions of dollars undoubtedly to some outside force. Your great, great grandchildren may still be paying off this debt and they most definitely will if Labor is re-elected. I ask you to look at the bigger picture - than just the one that is "what's in it for me" type mentality. The Economy must be strong; Bosses must make a profit so that they can hire you and me and our families. Retail must be strong so that we have a choice of goods to buy, etc etc. Please Oz, let's go back to the Liberals - the money people - the economists - the business people. Give Labor a big miss before it is too late for Oz because, if they are re-elected you can kiss goodbye to the future for many years to come.

I agree whole heartedly. It is a disgrace that our children will be faced with paying of our national debt, caused through Labors inability to manage our economy after inheriting a credit of 20 billion and then in a short time having a debt of 400 billion during times of record income from the mining companies. Queensland alone is broke, owing 80 billion through labor mismanagement. Only prosperous business can give jobs. Nothing else works. My question to Rudd----What is he going to do about paying off his debt, and how long will it take. At present it is blowing out at 3 billion a week. How much interest a week is this debt costing Australians. I hope someone can answer that for me.

I had half formed thoughts about the situation which I intended to post here, but then I read your contribution and decided that I couldn't really improve on it.
I would only add my disgust at the trivialisation of news in this day and age. Why, in an innocent context today, Tony Abbott had the temerity to use the expression "sex appeal" and the twittering masses were all over it. It even made the evening "news" bulletins. Give us a break, should we post a reward for common sense?

Foxy I just googled Wanker and the closest I could get was Wankery.
Often used to describe the actions of some one playing a guitar, and to a lesser extent an electric bass.
Most times, Guitar/bass wankery is when a guitarist/bassist makes excessive use of soloing and techniques such as shrills, taps, slaps & pops, slides, bends, sweeps and the like to the point where its nothing but self satisfaction.
Since such self satisfaction is often said to come from showing off to people with the talents listed above, it has become widely known amongst guitarist/bassist as Wankery.
Some douche in Guitar Center was trying to impress people with some guitar wankery.
Now I am really confused, No,,,, now I am waiting for somebody to tell me to get back on subject.

Young Simmo, I am sure the word Wanker refers to men, regardless of occupation, as those who are an egotistical moron who think with their D..k and not with their brains. It is self satisfaction in trying to make someone look stupid, in this case, himself. You can see this every time he appears on T.V.

You are also part of surfer & Surfer little entourage because you spit out the same stuff when you KNOW it is a LIE. A whopping BIG LIE.

Australia has been managed BRILLIANTLY by Labor. We have ticked ALL the GOOD economic boxes, at the same time WHICH has never been done by any other government in the HISTORY of the WORLD.

AUSTRALIA is economically at the VERY TOP of the WORLD and we are the MOST EGALITARIAN nation in the WORLD (wealth spread out).

We can't go any higher BUT Abbott and your group of human BOTS can CERTAINLY take us DOWN, DOWN, DOWN.

EXAMPLE: Murdoch's, sorry, Abbott's NFN will put Australia back 20 years and will disadvantage YOUR kids and grandkids because ONLY those that can afford up to $5000 can replace the 100 year old copper with a substandard fibre.

Labor's NBN goes to everyone, there is NO distinction between people with wealth and people without wealth. That is why UNDER LABOR we are the most EGALITARIAN nation in the world.

I note in America if something comes out wrong or they just say what later proves to be a blatant lie they are said to have misspoke.
This country needs a fresh start because the labor way has cost us all dearly and surely we cannot have a recycled tyrant running the country for another term.
This person has not changed and using copious notes which it has been said he checked 50 times during the debate does not define him as just a cheat, as many are saying.
Rather, it displays his shear arrogance that he thinks he can flout the agreed rules, and too bad for Tony who did abide by the rules, and the polls I have seen, rate him as the clear winner.

I sincerely hope that we have indeed reached the bottom of the barrel. Could it get worse? I too will find it hard to vote for either. I think others have said it all about Rudd, so I wont go there. Abbott has done nothing but kick heads and bag everything for 3 years, so I have great fears as to what he would do, as the libs historically hate working people, and love the dollar people. His colleagues have left little hope. Who can Who could forget Howard's "that wasn't a core promise" and "there will be no GST", and for fellow Queenslanders, "no public sector worker need fear me if I become Premier". The most frightening of all is the decline in the information that we are fed, with the bias of a media empire being quite obvious. I do hope that this is as bad as it gets, bad I think it will get worse. The farm has mostly been sold off (Telstra, Commonwealth Bank, etc) by previous administrations, so there is not much left of the lucky country. One thing that we can bet on is that in the first couple of weeks of the new government, we will see something like Hawke's "arrrrr there isn't as much money as we thought, so we will cut..." Good luck all. Either way, we are in for a rough ride, and retirees are an easy target.

    13th Aug 2013

There is little choice in the upcoming election but to stick with what we've got. The Liberals, led by Abbott, if elected, will immediately commence to break every promise that they have made, because "things have changed since we were elected".

When you get a West Australian Federal Liberal MP stating that Abbott will be forced to break election promises if he's elected PM, then you have to sit up and take notice.

    http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/18471430/bad-budget-could-force-libs-to-break-promises/

This technique has been the hallmark of the Barnett Liberal Govt since their recent re-election. Barnett has blithely broken election promise after election promise - and produced more "slugs" for ordinary working people in the form of increased charges, than I have seen in the last 20 yrs.

The final straw was Barnetts idea of halving solar panel feed-in tariffs. He was quite prepared to renege on 10 yr contracts signed with Synergy and backed by the Govt. Imagine trying to renege on a contract with Barnetts Govt!! He'd sue you to the nth degree!!

The only reason Barnett has backed down on the solar panel tariff plan, is the incandescent fury of tens of thousands of West Australians who had made long-term solar panel plans, and even borrowed money to finance those plans.

The outrage over Barnetts scheme to rob solar panel owners, initiated calls for a class-action lawsuit, and Barnett was forced to back down when a letter was produced, addressed to all solar panel owners, that stated that Synergy and the Govt guaranteed their contracts for the 10 yr contract period.

Now here's the rub. Barnett was trying to save $50M on Govt expenditure - while he has personally overseen an utterly disastrous rebuild of an ancient coal-fired power station at Muja - that has had massive unplanned cost over-runs totalling $250M!! That's $250M of W.A. taxpayers money absolutely wasted!!

This is classic Liberal-style management! They state they are better managers than Labor, when they are no better at all!!
Barnett even possesses an economics degree, for Gods sake - and that's a whole lot more economic qualifications, than Abbott possesses!!

Mark my words, if Abbott and Co are elected, we will all end up with higher charges for everything - reduced services as privatisation deals are given to business mates - and on top of that, Abbott proposes to reduce taxes on big business by 1.5%!!

Half the economic problems we have at present, are that highly profitable businesses are dodging tax at every opportunity - using offshore entities, scheming lawyers and accountants - and any trick they can conceivably come up with, to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

To give this group of schemers lower taxes will merely transfer an increased tax burden onto every working class Australian - who has no opportunity to indulge in the tax-dodging schemes and huge depreciation allowances that are available to businesses. This is a complete travesty, and typical of the Liberals idea of an economic "level playing field".

Positive plan for the future? Why doesn't Kevin Fraud let us in on his positive plans? Blackadder's off-sider had "cunning plans" and I am sure Hitler, Lenin and Mao Tse Tung also had rosy future plans for their countries. Just do not ask what the positive plans entail. I would like to know the positive plans for reducing illegal boat-borne migrants, repaying the debt to China and exactly when the NBN will be up and running for Australians and at what cost? It is a bit rich to ask Abbott to describe how he is going to reign in the Australian debt deficit when Treasury estimates are just that, estimates. We have had six years of indebtedness and mismanagement as well as broken promises and failed programs.
Labor is good at getting elected, but they do a rotten job in governing the country and managing the taxpayers' money.

They manage Australia so that its economy is the STRONGEST in the world and that the ordinary Australian has services, benefits, jobs, strong businesses, flourishing domestic economy, improve infrastructure, builds up Australia skills and expertise, etc, to ensure that Australia's future is a prosperous one.

I wish I could take over a business, where someone left me a bucket load of cash, and then spend it willy nilly on frivolous gestures, to everyone around me. That is what this Labour Government has done in the past 6 years. Howard left them with a huge surplus and now whichever side wins this election they will inherit a huge debt. Except that we, the taxpayers, will have to pay it back. It seems politicians, are never held accountable for their actions. Some of these guys would never survive in the real business world.

Massive debt will take years to pay off and only the Libs/Nats are capable of doing this. It is not their fault they have inherited this, but solely the idiotic spendthrift labor govt. Just like the 80 billion debt Capt Bligh left the Newman govt. When you are left with a mess like this it requires tough and unpopular decisions to rectify, but don't ever forget it was labor that caused the problem.

NO...NO...NO surfer (human BOT), we DO NOT have a massive debt we have a tiny, tiny DEFICIT which was used BRILLIANTLY to put Australia's economy on top of the world - YOU KNOW ALL THIS.

To SIT on a SURPLUS in when the world in is turmoil is utter STUPIDITY.

    Lets look at a business:

One firm sits on its cash and doesn't reinvest in infrastructure, assets, training of staff, health and safety of staff, research and development, market plans or innovation, etc.

The Other firms utilises its cash and even borrows from the banks to invest in infrastructure, assets, training of staff, health and safety of staff, research and development, market plans or innovation, etc.

Guess which business will GROW, create more WEALTH and ensure the FUTURE of the business.

The first firm is Liberal AND the Other firm is LABOR which is WHY our economy is the BEST in the WORLD.

As our major political parties have not executed the "Will of the People' for the benefit of the general public for many years now, we have not had any real choice for many years.

The Story the we - the general populace - cannot understand the real issues involved are "Smoke & Mirror" tactics and DO NOT WASH!

Whilst I don't agree with all policies of the Greens, they - in my opinion, are certainly heading in the right direction by protecting the "Air (oxygen) we breath", "The "Soil from which we (supposedly) get our nutrition" and the "water resources" which are the most fundamental of all needs of any life form on our planet!
The Greens at least recognise that the environment has "Major Economic Value" and that preserving the "Integrity & Health of it "Provides & Supports" the basic living conditions for ALL life on planet earth (Our Home).
Yes some of their proposed measures might seem drastic when initially confronted, but such is only because we have been programmed to "Think & React" the opposite way.
If we require to leave our (grand)children a planet that is worthwhile living on, we must preserve the integrity of our biosphere which includes all lifeforms that depend upon it.
We do not own planet earth but must act as caretakers for our children!

If we keep procrastinating the the GREENS" preferences go to one of the major parties anyway, they will never become a Major Force in politics.
The Greens movement is still young, vibrant and can possibly still be moulded to ensure that the "Will of the People" is and remains enacted!
If we "Get & Keep" our buts moving, it may just be possible to stop them being infiltrated by the Multinational Cartels and keep them working for the benefits of us ALL.

To close, I have included some famous quotes from some people who knew and understood the equation that lead to freedom.
Maybe we should consider if these wise world contain a message for us all!

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; It is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. George Washington

"The price of liberty is eternal vigilance." Thomas Jefferson

Planet earth does NOT need Humans. However, Humans certainly need a Healthy planet!

Patriot, I see little relevance in quoting and revering American "statesmen", when we are discussing Australian politics and Govt.

In case you missed it, we're not the 51st state, and we have a totally different Constitution and form of Govt to the United States.

It may also be very revealing to you that our founding fathers who wrote up our Constitution, carefully examined the American Constitution - and purposely left out many of the undesirable features of that Constitution, that have led to America's current huge social problems.

Aloysius, they have many policies and most of them are quite good for the average Australia, however, they do NOT favour multi-millionaires or billionaires..... now I see your problem, you are a flourishing billionaire who doesn't want any opposition, right, I can see that.

    Aaron
Bit harsh OLD boy, I myself quote some American statesmen because some of their wise comments are worth repeating. Plus you must remember that I have been called anti USA, because I may support the people but do NOT support their corporate controlled government.

Another thing.....the founding fathers who wrote up the American Constitution did a BLOODY good job and it has nothing to do with America's current social problems??? The huge and powerful Corporations did that all on their own.

If you are talking about guns..... you must remember there are gun LAWS and that their Constitution has been subject to the interpretation of the Judiciary - it is this interpretation that has placed guns as a holy grail. The Judiciary and the government in the USA being unduly influenced by huge Corporate concerns who run the USA according to their pocket and NOT on what is 'good' for the country.... hence, their current predicament which will get even worse shortly, as the GFC is not finish with them.

I only wish that we had a Constitution as good as theirs, without their political voting system and corporate control mechanisms, of course or the stupid requirement for a 'president'.

So, try not to be so ratty to other folks who are merely quoting wise and intelligent sayings....Patriot wasn't waving flags or singing anthems with his hand on his heart or anything.... what he had to say was quite reasonable.

    I agree totally! LET's.
Whilst FUNDS are certainly important, the curriculum is even more vital.

As a solution to funding, we - may be - could introduce a Primary School & High school HEX-System.
Implementation of this would make room for the parents to spend more money on the Pokies (even more income for the Bankers and Tax for Governments) and for the governments (and Councils) to raise the taxes even higher!
It also would achieve the objective to get out kids into "hock" to the International Bankers at an even earlier age.

For our young people to benefit it is essential that we first create an education system that teaches our kids to become independent "Thinkers" rather than rewards the "Follow the Leader" attitude.
Learning by "Route" to quote knowledge is totally different to UNDERSTANDING the issues.

Let's also teach the Australian Constitution which, though it has some flaws, is a mighty powerful document when enforced correctly.
It fails me why we tolerate that this document is not taught in our Highschools. After all, it outlines the rights of every (not just the rich ones) Australian citizen whilst, at the same time, it also formulates some of the duties that we all adhere to.

The only problem would be that, if we create "Independent thinkers" they might oppose the direction into Slavery that this country (and the rest of the world) is embarking upon.

Creating independent thinkers would (re)create independent communities that are self sustaining and do not need the Guiding hand of the "One-Worlders".

Such is an issue which I interpret as a MAJOR failure of our political parties.

Let us not forget that Free Education & changes to the curriculum have ALL occurred during the past 50 years or so when either political party was at the helm!

I do not find such actions very palatable!!!

Mussitate You just know what you're talking about and you probably understand a lot more than you're letting on.

When I arrived in this country as a "Legal $20.00 Tourist Immigrant" in 1965 the characteristics of this country that attracted me to it were as follows:
    1) The lowest tax rate of just about any country in the world
    2) The most efficient Public Service of just about any developed country in the world
    3) the smallest Public Service of just about any developed country in the world.
    4) Unlimited potential for complete self-sufficiency!

Almost 50 years "Stuffing Around" of the Main political parties have turned all these major good points around!
So have the "Pollies" in just about any other country in the world!

    1) We are now one of the highest taxed developed nations in the world (direct & Indirect taxes)
    2) We support a massive Public Service
    3) The public service is mighty inefficient
    4) We are importing an enormous amount of goods, services & food
Freighters from Aust (to NZ) with our butter are waving "Hello" to freighters
from New Zealand (to Aust) with their butter on board.
Similar situations exist for bananas, kiwifruit, apples and many other commodities!
This should be "Absolutely NUTS" to any brain with normal thought capacity!
Don't they want Australian businesses to prosper?
Re-introduce "Tariffs" as their abandonement was the most detrimental action introduced by our "Labour " NLP Pollies"!

I'd say, give somebody else a chance and - to speak with an Aust Statesman (just to keep everybody happy):"Lets keep the bastards hones this time".

You are very wrong in your assessment . Howard flogged off billions upon billions of public assets while reducing in real terms funding of public health and education . His was the highest taxing govt we have had . We had to wait for Labor to get in to stop the milk surcharge ( tax ) so it went on for years and years . No infrastructure works except the failed Darwin rail . Then to top it all off he left us with a structural deficit with tax and super breaks to the well . Mind you in 2007 Rudd was elected on similar tax cuts but smaller in size , still too much . The Howard years were wasted . China did a lot to get us through the GFC but like us China had a stimulus package . The difference being that theirs was massive compared to ours . They never asked for handouts or complained about their lodgings, they were just happy to get a start on life. Because of our parents being so careful with their money it was instilled in us not to want everything we liked. I would love to have the money for a trip overseas. My overseas trip on our Honeymoon was on the ferry to Manly. Did we complain, NO. Too many people today just whinge and whine about the government, but we are still in the same position every year. What I object to is the waste of money, building gambling casinos, and racetracks so the poor sods gamble more to get out of the hole they are in. Scratchies, Tab tickets, Lottery tickets. What a waste. Enjoy everyday, take good care of your health, remember you can't take it with you. It's no use keeping all your money in the bank and then be the richest person in the cemetery. OK, I think this explains why we should all vote for Tony.
    *****************************************************************
The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited.
Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on
    salesmanship.

Little Sally led off. "I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30" she said
proudly, "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and
I credit that approach for my obvious success." "Very good", said the
    teacher.

Little Debbie was next. "I sold magazines" she said, "I made $45 and I
explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events."
"Very good, Debbie", said the teacher.

Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath.
Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of
cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467", he said.
"$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?"
    Toothbrushes", said Little Johnny.
"Toothbrushes", echoed the teacher, "How could you possibly sell enough
tooth brushes to make that much money?"
"I found the busiest corner in town", said Little Johnny, "I set up a Dip &
Chip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample." They all said
the same thing, "Hey, this tastes like dog shit!" Then I would say, "It is
dog shit, you wanna buy a toothbrush?" I used Kevin Rudd's method of giving
you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it's free, and
then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth."

Little Johnny got five stars for his assignment.

    WOW, here goes, Simmo.

i would like to point out that all countries are in debt to themselves. the government borrows money by selling bonds, gold to the public primarily investors, corporations, banks, so its really big companies mix of investors ( lenders of all nationalities buying gov debt of all nations . for example the world bank and i.m.f. government usually issues a bond of various types, some with extremely lengthy maturation dates. these bonds can be purchased both locally and by foreign investment funds. if we are unable to repay our debt it would have tremendous impact on local economic development. a country that spends too much money on refinancing debt is no different from an individual. LESS AND LESS MONEY IS AVAILABLE TO DO OTHER THINGS

Flogging a dead horse? Appears to be a favourite pastime of Mussitate's. Instead of flogging those of opposing views, Mussitate insists on promoting a pathologically diseased and obsessive view of Communist ideology that only the equally obsessive and deluded regime in North Korea persists with. Thus Mussitate deserves the accolade of "Dead Horse Flogger of the Year"!

Spot on Wally, but then when you think that somebody knows at the start of a race they are going to get flogged to death, what else can you expect. The whole Julia Rudd run Communist Party has had their chance and Australia has woken up. Good by rubbish, and welcome to at least 12 years of sensible smart government to straighten out the mess. The only thing I don't see eye to eye with you is, your last statement. I would have thought, "Flogger of the Year" would be more accurate.

I am starting to think that the penny will drop and Muss-it-ate will realise he is so outnumbered, that he will do a Taskid. That is change his TAG, change his AVATAR, and change his ATTITUDE, so he can keep floating around in here under a different nom de plume.

Oakshot will get the bun rush to. Fancy that mob holding this country to ransom. The people and business waiting for those morons to make up their mind. We should have had another election in 2010 instead of allowing a group of drips to have the balance of power. Don't forget the Libs/Nats got many more votes. What a cockeyed system. Great Tony won't let that happen again.

Just remember when politicians say "it is not our intention ..." or "we have no plans for ..." this gives them the out to introduce the things they had no intention or plans for. Also when a new Government takes over it is easy for them to say "Oh the finances are in a much worse state than we were led to believe so we'll have to put on hold the promises we made pre-election and our cuts to services will need to much more severe than planned."

I agree, Both parties are throwing money around like drunken sailors. Not a word about pensioners that have paid their taxes for years and appear to be ignored. Baby bonus and two weeks paid leave for the fathers, have they all gone bonkers. We are told there is only big black holes, but NO if it means votes there are billions to give away. You would think it was their money, not the taxes from hard working Australians. Is everyone now expected to subsidise every kid that is born. Bloody ridiculous.

BUT GEE MATE WE STILL ALIVE AND KICKING????? and we vote ???babies and kids dont??.......... one would thought they be more interested in wanting our votes?????????? BUT again their looking after their own kids bring up their children and how it will help them??????????NOT US.in the future......am I mad yes I am.......throughing away so many billions is crazy in the wrong direction
