Update your winter wardrobe

Having well and truly said sayonara to summer it’s time to embrace the cooler weather and start dressing appropriately. One of the perks of winter is that the fashion is arguably more exciting, as you can be clever and create outfits, unlike when it’s so warm you just throw on a dress and sandals.

There’s no need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe – you’ve probably got plenty of key winter pieces from last year. And, following the increasing obsession with capsule wardrobes, the theory is you need just five trend driven pieces per season on top of your core clothes.

Here are our key picks for winter 2017;

Navy coat
Last year, it was all about the camel coat but this year I can guarantee you’ll live in a navy one. A statement for the season: the style should be oversized or military with bonus points for gold buttons. The best bit? It will go with absolutely everything.

Culottes / wide leg pants
Before you scream that these don’t suit you, I’ve yet to see many people fail to pull off culottes. The trick is to choose the right type for your body shape. If you want to lengthen your figure. Don’t pick any that are too short or cropped, and make sure the waist is high enough that you make your legs appear longer not shorter. If you’re not comfortable in culottes go for a more traditional pair of wide leg pants.

Anything tweed
Chanel inspired tweed is back in a big a big way this season. An instant way to look stylish and sophisticated, Zara really has this trend covered. Go for a short-sleeved top or jacket that you can wear with jeans, pants or a skirt. Want more? Follow in Jackie O’s footsteps and wear them together as a two piece suit.

Embroidered or velvet shoes
In another huge trend this season, forget boring black boots and step out in some fancy footwear instead. While velvet may not fare the best when it comes to puddles or wet weather, embroidered ones should be fine. Both these trends would also look great worn in a loafer style.

A statement scarf
The easiest and often cheapest way to embrace a trend or finish an outfit is with a statement scarf. Pick your print or colour of choice and proceed to wear it to death.
