What about your New Year’s goals?

Yes, it’s already November and the end of the year is rapidly approaching. Perhaps you made (and subsequently forgot about) some resolutions or goals at the start of the year. Never fear, there’s still time to dust them off and end the year on a high note.

The final months of the year are a great time to reflect on your goals and renew your focus on them. As there is little time left, it may be necessary to adjust your goals and be more realistic. Perhaps your goal was to lose 10kg by the end of the year. A positive way to spin this would be to take up jogging or a new sport and commit to training two days per week until the end of the year. Instead of trying to meet a huge savings goal, work instead on trying to re-evaluate your budget so you can start the New Year strong.

If you made some resolutions and failed to start them, try to reframe this as something more positive. Perhaps think about (even write down) any unrelated achievements you did make this year – a personal challenge you overcame or an event that made you feel good about yourself. Remember that a lot can happen in a year and you probably achieved a lot of positive things – even if you didn’t plan them.

If the resolutions you made earlier in the year are still important to you, look at how you can approach these goals differently in the New Year and make them happen. You might need to formulate a new plan of attack or even reassess the feasibility of a goal itself.

Instead of allowing the end of the year to dissuade you from trying to achieve your goals, let it be the final nudge in the right direction. Making an effort to wrap up lingering resolutions or recommit to personal goals will help you feel positive about the end of the year wrapping up. By the stroke of midnight on 31 December, you’ll have a clean slate with new habits to help make 2017 another successful year.
