Chalk your way to rust-free tools with these easy tips

For the DIY enthusiasts and the just-in-case handymen and women among us, a trusty set of tools is as essential as a good recipe is to a chef. But an all-too-common enemy is lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce on our precious metal implements: rust. This pesky oxidiser not only tarnishes the appearance of our tools but also eats away at their integrity and functionality. The culprit behind this unwelcome phenomenon? Moisture. However, fear not, we have a simple and effective solution that you can easily add to your toolkit.

Who would have thought that a humble piece of blackboard chalk, a relic from the days of dusty classrooms and screeching blackboards, could be the hero in our battle against rust? This unassuming saviour is not just for teachers and artists; it’s a moisture-absorbing marvel. Chalk’s natural porosity makes it an excellent desiccant, drawing in moisture from the surrounding air. The drier the air, the less chance there is for rust to form on your tools.

It turns out, chalk might be your best defence against rust and a simple solution to extend the life of your tools. Image Source: Karolina Grabowska / Pexels

To harness the power of chalk, start by giving your toolbox a spring clean. Empty it out, declutter (because let’s face it, we all have that one tool we’ve never used), and give it a good scrub. Once it’s spotless and dry, lovingly place your hand tools back inside. Now, for the magic: scatter several sticks of chalk across the various drawers or compartments of your toolbox. A small toolbox might only need a couple of sticks, while a larger one could benefit from five to seven. Close your toolbox tightly to prevent moisture and replace the chalk when it begins to crumble.

You might be tempted to grab that chunky stick of pavement chalk your grandkids left behind, but resist the urge. Smaller sticks of blackboard chalk are the way to go, as they distribute their moisture-absorbing abilities more evenly throughout your toolbox. And don’t get hung up on colour; whether you opt for classic white or a rainbow of hues, the moisture-absorbing effect remains the same.

Chalk can also be useful in other ways around the house. If your screwdriver keeps slipping while turning a screw, try rubbing some chalk on the head. The chalk will create extra friction, helping to stop it from slipping.

Now, let’s explore how chalk can help with other everyday issues. Is your door key getting stuck in the lock? Try rubbing a piece of chalk along the key’s teeth and tip, then insert and remove the key from the lock a few times. The chalk will absorb dirt and moisture, allowing the lock’s mechanisms to operate more smoothly.

Chalk can also work wonders when it comes to preserving your valuables. Place a few pieces of chalk where you store your silver items. The chalk will absorb excess moisture in the area, helping to prevent tarnishing. You can also keep a piece in your jewellery box to protect your silver jewellery from tarnishing as well.

Another way chalk can help maintain your home is to hang a small bag of chalk from one of the hangers in your closet. The chalk will absorb excess moisture, helping to prevent the musty smell that often accompanies humidity.

As we’ve seen, chalk is more than just a school supply—it’s a handy and versatile tool that can help solve various household challenges. From protecting your tools from rust to maintaining your silver items, its uses seem almost endless.

Have you used chalk in other unexpected ways around the house? Do you have any tips for rust prevention or moisture control? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
