Most people forget to clean these four spots—do you?

No matter how diligent we are with our cleaning routines, there are always a few sneaky spots around the house that seem to escape our attention.

Even the most fastidious among us—those who vacuum religiously, wipe down benchtops, and keep the laundry basket under control—can overlook certain areas that quietly collect grime, dust, and bacteria.

Professional cleaner Christy (@christyytiktok) has seen it all, and she recently shared her top four most commonly neglected cleaning spots.

If you’re looking to up your cleaning game—or just want to avoid any embarrassing surprises next time the grandkids come over—read on for her expert advice on the most commonly missed spots and how to tackle them with ease.

1. Behind and around the toilet

Let’s be honest: most of us focus our attention on the inside of the toilet bowl, but Christy says the real trouble spot is often behind and around the toilet. It’s easy to forget, but this area can harbour dust, hair, and, well, less pleasant things.

Bacteria and odours can build up quickly, especially in a humid bathroom. If you or anyone in your household has mobility issues, it’s even more important to keep these areas clean to prevent slips and maintain hygiene.

A quick weekly wipe with a disinfectant cloth or spray will do the trick. Don’t forget the tiles and the floor behind the toilet, too. If you have trouble bending or reaching, consider a long-handled cleaning tool.

2. Shower drains

We all know to scrub the shower walls and glass, but when was the last time you cleaned the drain? Christy recommends a weekly clean to prevent soap scum, hair, and other gunk from building up.

A clogged drain can lead to slow drainage, unpleasant smells, and even water damage if left unchecked. Plus, it’s much easier to maintain than to fix a full-blown blockage.

Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain, let it fizz for 15 minutes, then rinse with hot water. For stubborn build-up, place a dishwasher tablet on the drain and pour hot water over it. If you have long hair, a drain cover can help prevent clogs in the first place.

3. Baseboards

Baseboards are magnets for dust and pet hair, but they’re often overlooked during regular cleaning. Christy swears by damp duster sponges, which you can pick up cheaply at Bunnings or Kmart.

Dusty baseboards can affect air quality, especially if you suffer from allergies or sinus issues. They also make a room look less tidy, even if everything else is spotless.

Run a damp duster or microfibre cloth along the baseboards once a month. If you have trouble getting down low, try using a duster with an extendable handle.

4. Inside the fridge

We all wipe up the odd spill, but when was the last time you gave your fridge a proper deep clean? Christy recommends emptying the fridge every couple of months, removing the shelves, and washing them in the sink.

Spills and crumbs can lead to unpleasant odours and even mould. Regular cleaning also helps you keep track of what’s in your fridge, so you’re less likely to waste food.

Take everything out, remove shelves and drawers, and wash them with warm soapy water. Wipe down the interior with a gentle cleaner. For ongoing freshness, keep half a lemon or a small bowl of baking soda in the fridge to absorb odours.

Christy suggests identifying the areas you tend to neglect and creating a simple checklist. Spend 20-30 minutes a day on one or two tasks, rather than letting it all pile up.

Keeping on top of these often-forgotten areas isn’t just about appearances. It can help prevent health issues, reduce allergens, and even extend the life of your appliances and fixtures. Plus, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as knowing your home is truly clean—even in the places no one else sees.
